  • Myths, Fallacies and Mass Suffering: A Discussion with Illan Pappe and Nassim Moroozi with an Introduction by Linda Martín Alcoff

Nassim Noroozi, I Pappe et al.•ARTICLE•Philosophy in the Contemporary…•2026

Fallacies are often treated either as simple logical errors or as tactical tools to win debates and legitimize indefensible political positions. Curiously, despite their real-world impact, they are usuallytaught in an apolitical, stylized light. Historically, however, the study of fallacies has been driven by a pursuit of justice. It stems from concerns over paid deceptive narratives used to maintain power, foreign interference in political sovere…

  • Awakening resistance: The politics of sleep in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict

Bilal Hamamra, Sanaa Abusamra et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for Cultural Research•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 9

Drawing on Levinasian concepts of sleep, insomnia, and the il y a, this paper examines the liminal states of insomnia and sleep within the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Sleep and insomnia, being proximates of death as well as displacement and anonymous existence successively, are topics that have not, to the best of our knowledge, received any critical commentary within (post)colonial studies. This paper argues that the Israeli military occupatio…

  • An Indicative Archive: Salvaging Nakba Documents

    I Pappe•ARTICLE•Journal of Palestine Studies•2020•Cited by: 4

This Special Document File examines the closure of documents on the Nakba in the Israeli archives and argues that this closure must be juxtaposed with recent intensified U.S. and Israeli attempts to depoliticize the Palestine question and to delegitimize the Palestinian narrative in general, and that of 1948 in particular. The documents are important because they expose the systematic nature of the 1948 ethnic cleansing of Palestine, both in plan…

  • The Israeli Nationality Law: A Blueprint for a Twenty-first Century Settler-Colonial State

    Open Access•I Pappe•ARTICLE•Journal of Holy Land and…•2019

This article examines the recent Israeli Nationality Law within a historical context. It argues that the law in many ways manifests the settler-colonial identity of the State of Israel and as such the law embodies clearly both the achievements of the Zionist movement and Zionist future designs. The law is not an extreme right-wing document but rather an accurate reflection of the major characteristics of the Zionist settler-colonial movement in P…

  • The Forgotten Palestinians: A History of the Palestinians in Israel

    I Pappe, Jaime Blasco Castiñeyra•BOOK•Forgotten Palestinians•2017

For more than 60 years, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have lived as Israeli citizens within the borders of the nation formed at the end of the 1948 conflict. Occupying a precarious middle ground between the Jewish citizens of Israel and the dispossessed Palestinians of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, the Israeli Palestinians have developed an exceedingly complex relationship with the land they call home; however, in the innumerable disc…

  • Historiophobia or the Enslavement of History: The Role of the 1948 Ethnic Cleansing in the Contemporary Peace Process

    Open Access•I Pappe•ARTICLE•Arab Studies Quarterly•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This article examines closely the role of the 1948 Palestinian catastrophe in the contemporary peace process. It argues that peace mediation in the conflict regarded history in general an obstacle for progress and the Palestinian victimization in 1948 as a marginal and irrelevant issue. This peace process, which ignored the ethnic cleansing of Palestine in 1948 and its impact on the contemporary reality, failed dismally. The article argues that o…

  • The Framing of the Question of Palestine by the Early Palestinian Press: Zionist Settler-Colonialism and the newspaper Filastin , 1912–1922

    Open Access•I Pappe•ARTICLE•Journal of Holy Land and…•2015

This article uses a new conceptual approach to the question of Palestine, namely the settler-colonialism paradigm. This paradigm enabled scholars to develop the depiction of Zionism as a settler-colonialist project. However new approaches which have focused on Zionism as a settler-colonialist movement have, in fact, neglected indigenous Palestinian perspectives. The article advocates further refinement to the discourse of anti-colonialism by revi…

  • Collaboration in struggle in Palestine: The search for a thirdspace

    I Pappe•ARTICLE•Settler Colonial Studies•2014

This paper unfolds the history of collaborative resistance in Palestine since the first waves of Zionist immigration at the end of the nineteenth century. Relaying on Lefebvre and Soja, the chapter conceptualises this type of resistance in terms of ‘thirdspaces’ and problematises the history of the creation and sharing of these spaces by Palestinians and Jews.

  • The Modern Middle East: A Social and Cultural History

    I Pappe•BOOK•Modern Middle East•2013

This hugely successful, ground-breaking book is the first introductory textbook on the Modern Middle East to foreground the urban, rural, cultural and women’s histories of the region over its political and economic history. Ilan Pappé begins his narrative at the end of the First World War with the Ottoman heritage, and concludes at the present day with the political discourse of Islam. Providing full geographical coverage of the region, The Moder…

  • Revisiting 1967: The false paradigm of peace, partition and parity

    I Pappe•ARTICLE•Settler Colonial Studies•2013

This article argues that when the paradigm of settler colonialism is applied to the Israeli policy towards the occupied territories it provides a satisfying explanation for why the present and hegemonic paradigm of peace is a charade that will lead to nowhere. The article examines this paradigm as an outcome of both Zionist ideology and the strategy adopted by the Israeli government immediately after the 1967 war

  • Shtetl Colonialism: First and Last Impressions of Indigeneity by Colonised Colonisers

    I Pappe•ARTICLE•Settler Colonial Studies•2012

We passed by an old barefoot Arab, leading a loaded camel. His ancestors for ages must have driven loaded camels and shepherded sheep, erected tents and at nights ignited fire baked pitta bred and set around the fire, smoking and telling fables into the quiet night. And I – I just arrived, hardly slept one night in Eretz Israel, hardly drank a glass of water, hardly walked a mile, and yet I saw this Arab as an alien. I was the inhabitant and he w…

    I Pappe•ARTICLE•Critical Studies on Terrorism•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 8

This article follows the representation of Palestinian nationalism as a history of terrorism. This representation was produced in the Israeli media and academia, and broadcast by the state's political elite in international arenas. In the West, this image was accepted in many circles and affected the chances of the Palestinians having a fair hearing in the peace negotiations which began after the 1967 war. • The 1948 Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine

    I Pappe•BOOK•Journal of Palestine Studies•2006•Cited by: 55

This article, excerpted and adapted from the early chapters of a new book, emphasizes the systematic preparations that laid the ground for the expulsion of more than 750,000 Palestinians from what became Israel in 1948. While sketching the context and diplomatic and political developments of the period, the article highlights in particular a multi-year “Village Files” project (1940–47) involving the systematic compilation of maps and intelligence…

    Open Access•Ilan Gur-Ze’ev, Ilan Gur-Ze'ev et al.•ARTICLE•Theory Culture & Society•2003•Cited by: 19

This article follows the formulation of a new Palestinian attitude toward the Holocaust memory. It presents it as a bold challenge to past Palestinian perceptions of and attitudes toward the Holocaust memory. This novel Palestinian stance connects the Holocaust memory to the memory of the Nakbah, the Palestinian catastrophe of 1948. It is part of a critical deconstruction of the manipulation of collective memory in the service of nationalism. The…

Post-Zionism has exposed the intellectual fallacies underlying traditional Zionism's attempt to combine ethnic segregation with an open society, but it is the moral and ideological substitute offered by neo-Zionism, opting for ethnic segregation as an ultimate goal, that is mounting the real political challenge. This article argues tha…
