Direct and indirect burden of Covid-19 on mortality in Spain (2020 to 2022)
Not applicable
Decomposing life expectancy changes in Spain in the Covid-19 pandemic and post-pandemic periods
Four years after the beginning of the pandemic, age groups under 45 years old have still negative contributions to LE. Tumours and cardiovascular diseases have the more positive contribution to LE changes in 2019/2023. Nevertheless, while tumours contributed positively each single year, cardiovascular diseases only made a relevant positive contribution in the post-pandemic 2023
Burden of postmenopausal breast cancer attributable to excess body weight
BACKGROUND: 10% of postmenopausal breast cancer cases are attributed to a high body mass index (BMI). BMI underestimates body fat, particularly in older women, and therefore the cancer burden attributable to obesity may be even higher. However, this is not clear. CUN-BAE (Clínica Universidad de Navarra-Body Adiposity Estimator) is an accurate validated estimator of body fat, taking into account sex and age. The objective of this study was to comp…
Instantaneous reproduction number and epidemic growth rate for predicting Covid-19 waves
Introduction: Several indicators were employed to manage the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, our objective was to compare the instantaneous reproductive number and the epidemic growth rate in the Spanish population. Methods: Data on daily numbers of cases, admissions into hospitals, admissions into ICUs, and deaths due to COVID-19 in Spain from March 2020 to March 2022 were obtained. The four "pandemic state indicators", which are daily numbers…
Time of leaving work pregnancy results during Covid-19 pandemic. The Moacc-19 cohort from Spain
Several pregnancy and women characteristics were associated with leaving work earlier in the COVID-19 pandemic, although it was not associated with any pregnancy outcome
Changes in preterm birth and stillbirth during Covid-19 lockdowns in 26 countries
Preterm birth (PTB) is the leading cause of infant mortality worldwide. Changes in PTB rates, ranging from −90% to +30%, were reported in many countries following early COVID-19 pandemic response measures ('lockdowns'). It is unclear whether this variation reflects real differences in lockdown impacts, or perhaps differences in stillbirth rates and/or study designs. Here we present interrupted time series and meta-analyses using harmonized data f…
Perception of Medical Students on the Need for End-of-Life Care
End-of-life care and the limitation of therapeutic effort are among the most controversial aspects of medical practice. Many subjective factors can influence decision-making regarding these issues. The Q methodology provides a scientific basis for the systematic study of subjectivity by identifying different thought patterns. This methodology was performed to find student profiles in 143 students at Cantabria University (Spain), who will soon dea…
Evolution of Medical Students’ Perception of the Patient’s Right to Privacy
During clinical rotations, medical students experience situations in which the patients' right to privacy may be violated. The aim of this study is to analyze medical students' perception of clinical situations that affect patients' right to privacy, and to look for the influential factors that may contribute to the infringement on their rights, such as the students' age, sex, academic year or parents' educational level. A cross-sectional study w…
Induction of Sars-CoV-2-Specific IgG and IgA in Serum and Milk with Different Sars-CoV-2 Vaccines in Breastfeeding Women
Breastfeeding mothers were excluded from the clinical trials conducted for vaccines against SARS-CoV-2. Since the start of the vaccination, some doubts have arisen regarding its compatibility with breastfeeding. The aim of this study was to analyse the presence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in breast milk and serum (IgG and IgA) of vaccinated breastfeeding women. The main variables of the observational study were: adverse related events after vac…
Consumption of Ultra-Processed Food and Drinks and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia in the MCC-Spain Study
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is the most common leukemia in adults in Western countries. Its etiology is largely unknown but increasing incidence rates observed worldwide suggest that lifestyle and environmental factors such as diet might play a role in the development of CLL. Hence, we hypothesized that the consumption of ultra-processed food and drinks (UPF) might be associated with CLL. Data from a Spanish population-based case-control s…
Pregnancy and Birth Outcomes during the Early Months of the Covid-19 Pandemic
The new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, is devastating for specific groups of patients, but currently there is not enough information concerning its effects on pregnant women. The purpose of this study is to identify the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on pregnancy and the consequences that it could cause. We studied a cohort of pregnant ladies who were tested for SARS-CoV-2 infection by RT-PCR and classified as infected or not infected. The recruitment …
Influence of Socioeconomic Status on Sars-CoV-2 Infection in Spanish Pregnant Women. The Moacc-19 Cohort
Little is known on socio-economic factors associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection in pregnant women. Here, we analyze the relationship between educational, occupational, and housing variables with SARS-CoV-2 infection in a cohort of 988 pregnant women in Spain. Pregnant women were recruited at the University Hospital Marques de Valdecilla, Santander, Spain, among those delivering from 23 March 2020 onwards or consulting for their 12th week of pregna…
Declared Reasons for Cessation of Breastfeeding during the First Year of Life
Our results highlight the need to improve the health policies for the promotion, protection, and support for the initiation and maintenance of breastfeeding. In particular, our results highlight the importance of researching women's low milk production and work-related factors, with particular emphasis on improving conciliation measures
Results of Pregnancy Control before and during the Covid-19 Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic placed pregnant women at high risk, but behavioural changes have also led to lower rates of preterm births in high-income countries. The main goal of this article is to study the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on pregnancy control and outcomes; this is a joint analysis of two cohorts. The pre-pandemic cohort includes 969 pregnant women recruited in 2018. The pandemic cohort comprises 1168 pregnant women recruited in…
Body shape trajectories and risk of breast cancer
Objective: The aim of this study was to assess body shape trajectories in childhood and midlife in relation to subsequent risk of breast cancer (BC) in a Mediterranean cohort. Design: The ‘Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra’ (SUN) Project is a dynamic prospective cohort study of university graduates initiated in 1999. With a group-based modelling approach, we assessed body shape trajectories from age 5 to 40 years. Multivariable Cox regression mo…
Health Care Costs Associated to Type of Feeding in the First Year of Life
Children artificially fed brought about more health care costs related to infectious diseases than those exclusively breastfed or mixed breastfed. Excess costs were caused in hospital admissions, primary care consultations, emergency room consultations and drug consumption
Dietary Constituents
The aim of this study was to characterize the relationship between the intake of the major nutrients and prognosis in breast cancer. A cohort based on 1350 women with invasive (stage I-IV) breast cancer (BC) was followed up. Information about their dietary habits before diagnosis was collected using a semi-quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire. Participants without FFQ or with implausible energy intake were excluded. The total amount consumed…
Quality of Life in a Cohort of 1078 Women Diagnosed with Breast Cancer in Spain
Breast cancer is the most frequent cause of tumors and net survival is increasing. Achieving a higher survival probability reinforces the importance of studying health-related quality of life (HR-QoL). The main aim of this work is to test the relationship between different sociodemographic, clinical and tumor-intrinsic characteristics, and treatment received with HR-QoL measured using SF-12 and the FACT/NCCN (National Comprehensive Cancer Network…
Misperception of the Cardiovascular Risk in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis
The risk of cardiovascular (CV) disease and mortality is increased by rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, data on how RA patients perceive their own CV risk and their adherence to CV prevention factors are scarce. We conducted an observational study on 266 patients with RA to determine whether the perceived CV risk correlates to the objective CV risk, and if it influences their compliance with a Mediterranean diet and physical exercise. The objec…
Epidemiology of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs consumption in Spain. The MCC-Spain study
Non-aspirin NSAIDs were more consumed by women and aspirin by men. The age patterns of aspirin and non-aspirin NSAIDs were opposite: the higher the age, the lower the non-aspirin NSAIDs usage and the higher the aspirin consumption. People with cardiovascular risk factors or diseases consumed more aspirin, but they did not decrease their non-aspirin NSAIDs usage
A Multicentre and stratified study of the attitude of medical students towards organ donation in Spain
Spanish medical students generally have a favourable attitude towards organ donation, although 20% are not in favour
Validation and psychometric analysis of the Internet Addiction Test in Spanish among college students
The reliability and psychometric properties obtained in this study support the conclusion that this Spanish short version of the IAT represents a useful tool for the analysis of problems arising from misuse of the Internet
Disparities in Access to Prenatal Care Services for African Immigrant Women in Spain
Adherence to Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (Haart)
Relationship Between Family History of Breast Cancer and Health-Related Behavior
This article explores the relationship between family history of breast cancer (FHBC) and health-related behavior and medical management, using a cross-sectional analysis of 685 women, based on self-report. The influence of FHBC on lifestyle (alcohol use, physical activity, weight and diet) and medical management decisions (screening for chronic diseases) was assessed using odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Adjustment for confoun…

Consistency in gene-Alzheimer’s disease association studies
Throughout the past decade, a great number of studies have been published searching for a gene-disease association. Ioannidis et al , studying a variety of diseases, pointed out that the first time such a relation is shown it correlates moderately with later results.1 Sporadic Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has been extensively studied searching for gene causation.2 Apart from the well established relation with ApoE e-4 genotype, other gene candidates …
Smoking among pregnant women in Cantabria (Spain)
The frequency of smoking among pregnant women is very high in Cantabria. As smoking cessation rate has decreased over time, a change in prenatal care programme on smoking counseling is needed. Several determinants of smoking cessation, such as smoking before pregnancy and partner's smoking, should be also addressed by community programmes
