Work hard, play hard…or maybe not
Relationships between workaholism, work-leisure conflict, and work stress were examined. The sample consisted of 339 working adults in the United States. Workaholism was positively correlated with work stress. Additionally, work leisure conflict was positively related to both workaholism and work stress. Moreover, though not a significant moderator, work-leisure conflict was a significant mediator between workaholism and work stress such that wor…

Racial Differences in Adolescents’ Answering Questions About Suicide
The present purpose was to examine racial differences in response rate and serious behavioral suicide risk based on the national Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey (YRBS). Data from 15,245 adolescents (YRBS, 2011) were included. Survey items pertaining to making suicidal plans and attempting suicide were included. Significant differences in responding and content emerged, especially with regard to suicide attempts. Racial minority adolescent…
Forgiveness and health
Attachment was examined for its association to forgiveness and health. Young adults were interviewed about a time of conflict with a parent; during rest and interview periods, readings of blood pressure and heart rate were taken. Participants completed surveys of forgiveness, attachment, relationship commitment, parental intrusiveness, and health. Analyses revealed strong associations among forgiveness, attachment, and health. Structural equation…
Sanctifying Work
Sanctification involves perceiving objects or events: (a) theistically by viewing them as having spiritual significance, or (b) nontheistically by viewing them as extraordinary and worthy of veneration and respect without any reference to a higher being. Previous research has found positive outcomes associated with sanctification, including increased satisfaction with marriage (CitationMahoney et al., 1999), body image (CitationMahoney, Carels, e…
Comparison of Rural and Urban Residents’ Implicit and Explicit Attitudes Related to Seeking Medical Care
Context: The decision whether or not to consult a physician draws from a variety of attitudes within an individual’s health schema. While rural Americans are in greater need of health care, many of them have fewer external resources than urbanites available to them. Purpose: The objective of this study was to elicit implicit and explicit attitudes related to seeking medical treatment for a condition described as fairly serious. Participants were …
Internet Recruiting
In this study, the authors investigate the effects of two web site design features on prospective applicants' evaluations of a hiring company's online recruitment image. A total of 175 students navigated one of four web sites to locate and review a job advertisement. Participants visited a web site that was easy or difficult to surf and viewed a job ad that was presented in bullets or paragraphs of text. Afterward, they completed a survey that me…
Misanthropy, idealism and attitudes towards animals
When evaluating the ethical status of an action that harms a nonhuman animal (henceforth animal), one might weigh the benefit to humankind against the cost of the harm done to the animal. To the extent that one does not like humans (is misanthropic), one will not be likely to think that benefits to humans can justify doing harm to animals. We hypothesized that misanthropy would be less strongly related to support for animal rights among idealists…
Cross-Species Fostering Affects Meat Preferences of Wild House Mice
Wild-strain male house mice were fostered at birth onto conspecifics, deer mice, or domestic Norway rats. In adulthood, their flesh-eating preferences were tested by allowing them to feed from freshly asphyxiated conspecifics and either deer mice or rats. The mice ate significantly more conspecific flesh than contraspecific flesh, except when the flesh offered was that of the contraspecies upon which the mouse had been fostered at birth. The fail…
Effects of Physical Attractiveness, Sex, and Type of Crime on Mock Juror Decisions
A study previously conducted with American college students was replicated with Chinese college students. The Chinese subjects read a description of either a burglary or a swindle where the defendant was either male or female, physically attractive or unattractive, and Chinese or American. A biographical sketch and a photograph of the defendant were attached to the description of the crime. Subjects were asked to indicate the length of sentence a…
Acoustic Interference in a Recognition Task
Phonetic or acoustic characteristics of stimuli in recall studies have consistently been shown to generate more interference over short intervals than semantic characteristics. We performed three experiments to determine whether this characteristic also applied to recognition processes over short intervals. Subjects were shown study lists of eight words and were asked to recognize which of those words recurred on subsequent eight-word lists. Dela…
Female Prairie Deer Mice Prefer Conspecific Flesh Over Contraspecific Flesh
Hungry adult female deer mice were presented with freshly asphyxiated conspecifics and house mice. The deer mice showed a reliable preference for the conspecific flesh during the first 2 hr of testing, but this preference was attenuated during the following 20 hr of testing. Previous research has shown that male deer mice prefer contraspecific flesh. The preference of female deer mice for conspecific flesh is attributed to their tendency to be mo…
Development of Responsiveness to Conspecific Scent in House Mice
Responses to male conspecific odors (soiled bedding) presented in an alleyway were compared among five groups of adult male albino house mice with different rearing histories. Both isolated mice that had as pups been fostered onto a rat mother and normally nursed mice that had been group housed since weaning showed reduced attraction to conspecific odor. Preweaning paternal presence, a factor known to affect the development of response to male co…
Exposure to Onion Taste in Mother'S Milk Leads to Enhanced Preference for Onion Diet Among Weanling Rats
Five mothers of 50 newborn rat pups were maintained on either standard lab chow or a diet composed of the same chow with onion powder added. Taste preference tests administered during weaning indicated that the pups whose mother was fed the onion chow showed a preference for onion diet, but that such preference dissipated across the five day testing period. A control group of pups who were exposed to any onion diet cues available through channels…
