This paper discusses the writings of Marx on peasants, and argues that the characterisation of him as 'against' the peasant overlooks the central ambivalence in his theory. It considers Marx's relevant writings on Asia, Ancient Greece and Rome, European feudalism, and, more specifically, England, France and Russia, and attempts to account for the development of his views over time.
