  • Interact and React

Open Access•Ian Brookes, Siân Brooke•ARTICLE•AoIR Selected Papers of Internet…•2026

Discussions of gender diversity in open-source software (OSS) often focus on increasing women’s participation rather than questioning how their contributions shape development itself. This study examines $2 , a widely used tool for building websites and applications, to explore gendered patterns in contribution over 11 years (2013–2024). Using data from GitHub, a dominant platform for software collaboration, I analyze who contributes to different…

  • Designing for justice in freelancing

    Open Access•Ian Brookes, A H Rao•ARTICLE•Big Data & Society•2024

Online labour markets (OLMs) are a vital source of income for globally diverse and dispersed freelancers. Despite their promise of neutrality, OLMs are known to perpetuate hiring discrimination, vested in how OLMs are designed and what kinds of interactions they enable between freelancers and hirers. In this study, we go beyond understanding mechanisms of hiring discrimination in OLMs, to identifying platform design features that can minimise hir…

  • Programmed differently? Testing for gender differences in Python programming style and quality on GitHub

    Open Access•Ian Brookes, Sandra Gonzalez-Bailon et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Computer-Mediated…•2023•References: 4

The underrepresentation of women in open-source software is frequently attributed to women’s lack of innate aptitude compared to men: natural gender differences in technical ability (Trinkenreich et al., 2021). Approaching code as a form of communication, I conduct a novel empirical study of gender differences in Python programming on GitHub. Based on 1,728 open-source projects, I ask if there is a gender difference in the quality and style of Py…

  • Trouble in programmer’s paradise

    Open Access•Ian Brookes•ARTICLE•Information Communication & Society•2021

This paper examines gender-biases on Stack Overflow, the world’s largest question-and-answer forum of programming knowledge. Employing a non-binary gender identification built on usernames, I investigate the role of gender in shaping users’ experience in technical forums. The analysis encompasses 11-years of activity, across levels of expertise, language, and specialism, to assess if Stack Overflow is really a paradise for programmers. I first ex…

  • There are no girls on the Internet”

    Open Access•Ian Brookes, Siân Brooke•ARTICLE•First Monday•2019

Online anonymous forums are valued as spaces of open participation which facilitate multiple expressions of identity. In this paper I unmask how memes perpetuate existing gender power structures in spaces where users are only known by pseudonyms. The site of study is the r/AdviceAnimals forum of Reddit, in which a popular genre of memes known as Advice Animals are shared by users. Using a cross-section of Advice Animal memes submitted to this for…

  • Platforms, Plateaus, and String

    Open Access•Caroline Mcfarlane, Ian Brookes et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Inquiry•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 20

This article documents the process of attempting to challenge barriers that prevent disabled people with high levels of institutional intervention from taking part in research dissemination and its more elevated spaces of presentation, debate, and influence. We have sought to keep the disabled researchers on our team in the conversation throughout article production. Thus, the article is a series of dialogues conducted across the production proce…

  • The Eye of Power

Ian Brookes, Ian A Brookes•ARTICLE•Journal of Popular Film and…•2009•References: 5

In this article, The Apartment (1960) is genre contextualized as a corporation narrative in a reading that situates the film in relation to three types of power structure: firstly, of postwar Fordism; secondly, according to a conception of the panoptic corporation; and thirdly, as a Cold War text

  • The death of Chiron

    Open Access•Ian Brookes, I M Brookes•ARTICLE•The Classical Quarterly•1994•Cited by: 3•References: 2

The story of the death and catasterism of Chiron is one of the most charming and skilfully-presented episodes in the Fasti . Ovid relates how Hercules, in the course of his twelve labours, came to Mount Pelion, and was hospitably received by the centaur Chiron and his pupil, the young Achilles. While admiring Hercules' splendid arms, Chiron drops one of the hero's poisoned arrows onto his foot. Despite desperate attempts to find a remedy, he fail…
