Melting ice and transforming beliefs
Relevance of the Sixth IPCC Assessment Report to Indigenous lived realities
This article contributes to Indigenous literature on Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Assessment Reports (ARs) for an exploration of the science-policy-politics interface at the global scale. It presents findings from the systematic review of the latest AR6, conducted by the Knowledge Justice Collective, that examined Indigenous content in the report and the scientific knowledge base AR6 is based upon. It shows that paying attenti…
Is it just conservation? A typology of Indigenous peoples’ and local communities’ roles in conserving biodiversity
As conservation initiatives expand in response to biodiversity loss, there remains limited understanding about what forms of governance and roles for different actors produce the best ecological outcomes. Indigenous peoples’ and local communities’ (IPs’ and LCs’) roles extend beyond participation to more equitable governance based on relative control and recognition of their values and institutions, but the relationship with conservation outcomes…
Intervention: The invisible labor of climate change adaptation
Placing diverse knowledge systems at the core of transformative climate research
We argue that solutions-based research must avoid treating climate change as a merely technical problem, recognizing instead that it is symptomatic of the history of European and North American colonialism. It must therefore be addressed by decolonizing the research process and transforming relations between scientific expertise and the knowledge systems of Indigenous Peoples and of local communities. Partnership across diverse knowledge systems …
Mountains of inequality: Encountering the politics of climate adaptation across the Himalaya
There has been a widespread call for the development of transformative adaptation knowledge and strategies in the Himalayan region because of the intensifying onset of climate change impacts. But such transformative thinking is absent in much of Himalayan climate knowledge production, which builds on environmental deterministic and techno-managerial renditions of exceptional precarity; advocates for an increase in the scientific and expert driven…

Specifically, Interface prioritizes digital cultural production and research about and by Asian and Asian diasporic scholars to showcase the extensive work currently being undertaken in this field (98). Fo…

Climate Change, Perceptions, and Social Heterogeneity in Pharak, Mount Everest Region of Nepal
Based on 15 months of research conducted between 2010 and 2012, this paper examines how climate change is unfolding for Sherpas in Pharak, the southern part of Nepal's Everest region. Sherpas are noticing environmental changes, undergoing socioeconomic transformation, being introduced to climate change, and becoming exposed to multiple forms of environmental knowledge from various sources. Thus, climate change in this research emerges as an issue…
