  • Polygenic prediction of educational attainment within and between families from genome-wide association analyses in 3 million individuals

Open Access•Aysu Okbay, Yeda Wu et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Genetics•2022

We conduct a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of educational attainment (EA) in a sample of ~3 million individuals and identify 3,952 approximately uncorrelated genome-wide-significant single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). A genome-wide polygenic predictor, or polygenic index (PGI), explains 12–16% of EA variance and contributes to risk prediction for ten diseases. Direct effects (i.e., controlling for parental PGIs) explain roughly half th…

  • Between the sheets: Investigating young adults' communication during sexual activity

    Open Access•A Denes, J P Crowley et al.•ARTICLE•Personal Relationships•2020

The present study investigated young adults' self‐reported communication during sexual activity and its link to sexual and relational outcomes. The associations between two forms of communication during sexual activity (i.e., positive relational disclosures and erotic talk) and orgasm and relationship satisfaction were explored. Additionally, the study tested whether orgasm mediated the association between communication during sexual activity and…

For more than a decade, NTSCORP, the native title services provider for Aboriginal communities in NSW and ACT, has returned genealogical information to claimants in the form of ancestral family trees. The exceptionally popular program has seen more than 4,000 requests logged and completed. This article reviews some of the strengths and weaknesses of the program and how it has changed over time. It also considers the return of research material as…

    A Denes, J P Crowley et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Monographs•2020•Cited by: 10•References: 16

This study examined the effects of pillow talk (i.e., communication after sexual activity) on relationship satisfaction and physiological stress responses to difficult conversations. Fifty heterosexual couples were randomly assigned to either a pillow talk condition in which they doubled their pillow talk for three weeks or a control condition. After three weeks, participants came to the lab to engage in a conflict conversation. Saliva samples ta…

  • A return to sources: The folk life legacy of Eric R. Cregeen

    Margaret Bennett•ARTICLE•Folk Life•2020

Eric R. Cregeen (1921–83) was described in 2005 by the Historiographer Royal of Scotland as ‘a social scientist of the highest order ... a very fine historian and a very fine anthropologist ... far in advance of this time ... no one since has put the two disciplines together so effectively to illuminate the life of the Highlands.’ (Professor T. C. Smout, University of St Andrew’s). This paper gives a short biography of Cregeen’s life and follows …

    Open Access•A Dhillon, A Denes et al.•ARTICLE•Human Communication Research•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 63

  • The Longer History of Human Rights: Refuge in Early Modern Europe

    Margaret Bennett, Michael J Bennett•ARTICLE•History Australia•2012

According to Samuel Moyn, rather than seeking ‘to monumentalise human rights by rooting them in the deep past, it is much better to acknowledge how recent and contingent they really are’. This paper eschews a narrow and teleological history but nonetheless argues the importance of a deeper and broader perspective on the human rights. It discusses the relevance of the distinctive states-system of early modern Europe to ideas and practice in relati…

  • The Way Forward — Positive Discrimination or Positive Action

Open Access•Margaret Bennett, Michael Bennett et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2005

The focus of this article is an evaluation of the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000, which imposes duties on public authorities, and the Sex Discrimination (Election Candidates) Act 2002, which gives opportunities to political parties over the selection of candidates. Both of these Acts help to move anti-discrimination law in the United Kingdom away from a concentration on remedies for inconsistent treatment towards the acceptance of the need f…

  • Recovering the Black Female Body: Self Representations by African American Women

Debra Walker King, Margaret Bennett et al.•ARTICLE•African American Review•2002

Despite the recent flood of scholarly work investigating the interrelated issues of race, gender, and representation, little has been written about black women's depictions of their own bodies. Both past and present-day American cultural discourse has attempted either to hypereroticize the black female body or make it a site of impropriety and crime. The essays in this volume focus on how African American women, from the nineteenth century to the…

  • Gaelic Song in Eastem Canada: Twentieth-Century Reflections

    Margaret Bennett•ARTICLE•Ethnologies•1992

More than two centuries have passed since Canada became home to boatloads of Gaelic-speaking immigrants from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Though materially impoverished, they brought with them a wealth of oral tradition and a lifestyle characterised by the «taigh ceilidh» [visiting house] which promoted the continuation of their songs and stories. In the closing decade of the twentieth century thousands of Gaelic songs remain as a testi…
