  • A bifid mandibular condyle from a cremation grave from Paprotki Kolonia cemetery, Poland

    Open Access•Adam Budziszewski, Maciej Karczewski•ARTICLE•Anthropological Review•2024•References: 31

This study investigates the etiology of a bifid mandibular condyle found in a Bogaczewo culture cremation burial from the Paprotki Kolonia site 1. Using macroscopic analysis and CT imaging, we identified a sagittal separation of the mandibular condyle, suggesting a developmental origin. This represents the first known case of a bifid mandibular condyle from an Iron Age cremation context. Analytical potential is limited due to the preservation of …

  • Robbery or Ritual Activities? Searching for a Reinterpretation and Genesis of the ‘Robbed Barrows’ of Sudovian Culture

    Open Access•Maciej Karczewski•ARTICLE•Archaeologia BALTICA•2016

One peculiarity of the Suwalska Group of Sudovian culture is the very large number of barrows with destroyed inhumation graves. Since the 1950s, this fact has been interpreted as the result of the robbery of grave goods, which took place in late Antiquity. Common features in the ‘robbed graves’ observed in cemeteries at Osowa site I, and the villages of Szwajcaria and Żywa Woda, were: 1) the concavity of the top of the barrow and the lack of ston…

    Open Access•Małgorzata Karczewska, Maciej Karczewski•ARTICLE•Archaeologia BALTICA•2016

The article discusses the question of palaeolandscapes of cemeteries from the Roman Period and the Migration Period in the area of the Masurian Lakeland. The primary purpose of the multidisciplinary study was to answer the questions: 1) whether the natural features of the palaeolandscape were important for the choice of location for a cemetery; and 2) whether the inside landscapes of cemeteries were consciously shaped and lasted long. An analysis…

Pollen analysis of sediments from three lakes and analysis of plant macroremains including charcoal from archaeological sites in the Mazurian Lake District provide new data for the reconstruction of vegetation changes related to human activity between the 1st and 13th century AD. Maciej Karczewski•ARTICLE•Archaeologia BALTICA•2012
