  • High-precision dating of Abrigo de La Boja (Murcia, Spain)

Open Access•João Zilhão, Lucas Ageby et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Environments and Humans•2025

La Boja is a rock-shelter located in Murcia (Spain) whose c. 7 m infilling spans the last 50,000 years of the Pleistocene. Though punctuated by a few episodes of stasis or erosion, sediment accumulation proceeded at a regular rate, while human occupation was intermittent and light. This pattern allowed for the preservation of 31 well-separated Occupation Horizons whose stratigraphic integrity is demonstrated by stone tool refitting, the pristine …

  • The Early Upper Palaeolithic in Cueva del Arco (Murcia, Spain) and Its Contextualisation in the Iberian Mediterranean

Open Access•Didac Roman, Dídac Román Monroig et al.•ARTICLE•Open Archaeology•2024•References: 30

In this article, we present the results of the research carried out at the Gravettian occupation level of Cueva del Arco (Spain). For this purpose, a multidisciplinary investigation has been carried out in which all the elements recovered in the excavations carried out since 2015 at this site have been studied. The results are contextualised alongside all of the existing Gravettian sites in Mediterranean Iberia. The study of the material culture,…

  • First Data from the Prehistoric Site Complex of Cueva del Arco (Murcia, Spain)

Open Access•Ignacio Martín Lerma, Dídac Román Monroig et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 16

The southern Iberian Peninsula is a key area for understanding the timing and patterns of the Middle-to-Upper Palaeolithic transition. Recently, the excavation and study of new sites have provided new insights on this topic. The aim of this paper is to introduce Cueva del Arco, a site complex featuring distinct caves and rock shelters. Cueva del Arco is located at a short distance from the Almadenes gorge (Cieza, Spain) and preserves both Middle …

  • Obsidian in the Upper Palaeolithic of Iberia

    Open Access•João Zilhão, Diego E Angelucci et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2021•References: 14

Sourced from the Tyrrhenian Islands and exchanged over long distances, obsidian was used widely across prehistoric Western Europe. An obsidian core and bladelets from a newly discovered rockshelter site in south-eastern Spain, however, raised the possibility of an unrecognised mainland source of obsidian. EDXRF analysis of the Early Magdalenian finds from La Boja links them to a source 125km to the south-west. The artefacts were discarded during …

  • Breaking blades

Open Access•Marina Rodríguez, M Cristina López Rodríguez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Lithic Studies•2016

This research represents a first approach to the characterization of blade fractures produced intentionally using various techniques, according to an experimental protocol. The objective is to establish a reference base of marks which serve to define the fractures documented in the archaeological record. The fractured blade being a very common element in different sites throughout in the Iberian Peninsula during the Neolithic and Chalcolithic Age…

  • The Solutrean Site of Ambrosio Cave (Almería, Spain)

Sergio Ripoll López, Sergio Ripoll et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological Research•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Recent research in Ambrosio Cave, in the southeastern corner of the Iberian Peninsula, has permitted us to establish more precisely the chronostratigraphic position of major Solutrean occupations within the late Upper Pleistocene. The calibration of a new radiocarbon date for Level IV (Upper Solutrean) and six other new dates (5 of them by AMS) for level II (Final Upper Solutrean) allows us to place these two cultural phases between Greenland Sta…

The aim of this work is to communicate and popularize the usual protocol in Traceology, while discussing on methodological issues and on some practical applications which have been essayed in several sites up-to-date.

Open Access•Carmen Gutiérrez Sáez, Ignacio Martín Lerma et al.•ARTICLE•Espacio Tiempo y Forma Serie I…•2008

    Open Access•Ignacio Martín Lerma•ARTICLE•Panta Rei•2006
