  • Archaeological Correlates of the Rosetta Stone’s Great Revolt in the Nile Delta

    Open Access•Jay Silverstein, Robert J Littman•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2023•References: 32

A stratum at Tell Timai shows extensive evidence of violent destruction dating to the early 2nd century b.c. Burning, rapid abandonment of objects in a house, destruction of a kiln complex, weaponry, and unburied bodies spread over a wide area in North Tell Timai indicate the city of Thmouis was subject to an episode of warfare. Jay Silverstein, Robert J Littman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Mediterranean…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 13

In 2010, a construction project for a new water pumping station on the west side of Tell Timai (Egyptian Delta) encountered a limestone structure. This discovery triggered a salvage excavation that exposed a rare example of a well-preserved Delta nilometer. The architectural features of the nilometer reveal some specific and even unique adaptations consonant with the hydrological situation of the Graeco-Roman city of Thmouis. Unlike other example…

    Robert J Littman•ARTICLE•Mnemosyne•1984•Cited by: 11

Highly contagious plagues do not strike a single city at a single time and then disappear. The normal life span for an epidemic is 30 to 40 years. In the first attack a majority of the population would be infected. Those that survived would develop a total or limited immunity, depending on the disease. However, within a few years, new children would be born who did not have that immunity. Also some of those who might not have contracted the disea…
