The Persistence of the Gender Earnings Gap: Cohort Trends and the Role of Education in Twelve Countries
Studying twelve countries over 30 years, we examine whether women's educational expansion has translated into a narrowing of the gender gap in earnings when including persons with zero earnings. As educational attainment is cohort-dependent, an Age-Period-Cohort analysis is most appropriate in our view. Using the micro data from the Luxembourg Income Study (LIS) Database, we show that while, in terms of attainment of tertiary education, women hav…
Inequality of educational opportunity at time of schooling predicts cognitive functioning in later adulthood
Findings suggest that IEO is able to substantially influence cognitive development with long-lasting impacts. Lower-educated women of the cohorts under investigation may have been particularly vulnerable to high-inequality educational contexts
Cross-border mobility in European countries: Associations between cross-border worker status and health outcomes
CBWs are healthier and have more income. Interpretations suggest (1) a healthy cross-border phenomenon steming from a social selection and a positive association between income and the health index is confirmed; (2) the existence of major health disparities among CBWs; and (3) the rejection of the spillover phenomenon assumption for CBWs. The newly founded European Labour Authority (ELA) should take into account health policies as a promising way…

Core Values that Influence the Patient—Healthcare Professional Power Dynamic: Steering Interaction towards Partnership
Healthcare has long been marked by the authoritative-physician-passive-patient interaction, with patients seeking help and physicians seeking to restore patients back to health. However, globalisation, social movements, and technological advancements are transforming the nature of this relationship. We aim to identify core values that influence the power dynamic between patients and healthcare professionals, and determine how to steer these inter…
Life Satisfaction and mobility: Their associations with career attitudes, and health-related factors among postgraduates having studied in universities intra EU and outside EU
Attention should be devoted to the LS of local and cosmopolitan students, as it seems to be a relevant health indicator. Overall, the farther the mobility was, the higher the postgraduates' general LS (8.5/10) was; this indicator was higher than the LS indicator for the age group 25-34 years 7.53/10 (EU-28, in 2013). University' services could promote the development of career projects and the promotion of health to enhance postgraduates' LS. Uni…
Increases in wellbeing in the transition to retirement for the unemployed: Catching up with formerly employed persons
This paper examines the extent to which wellbeing levels change in the transition to retirement depending on transitioning from being employed, unemployed or economically inactive. Whereas transitioning from employment to unemployment has been found to cause a decrease in subjective wellbeing with more time spent in unemployment, it is not clear how transitioning from unemployment to retirement affects wellbeing levels. We use the Survey of Healt…

Socioeconomic hierarchy and health gradient in Europe: The role of income inequality and of social origins
Linear health gradients suggest gains in health per rank of income and of origins even at the very extremes of the distribution. Intergenerational transmission of status gains in importance in countries with higher income inequality. Countries differ in the association of income inequality and income-related health gradient, and low income inequality may mask health problems of vulnerable individuals with low status. Not only income inequality, b…
The Endless Baby Boomer Generation: Cohort differences in participation in political discussions in nine European countries in the period 1976–2008
Using the Eurobarometer cross-sectional data sets conducted between 1976 and 2008 in nine European countries, we aim to describe and explain cohort differences. We make use of recent improvements of the age–period–cohort (APC) methodology to have a better assessment of these cohort-based changes. At first, we find strong and significant cohort fluctuations in participation in political discussion where the people born in the period 1945–1955 have…
The Impact of Cohort Membership on Disposable Incomes in West Germany, France, and the United States
This paper uses age-period-cohort models to show that the living standards (total monetary incomes after public benefits and contributions, adjusted for household size and inflation) of successive birth cohorts in the United States and Germany are strongly correlated with general changes in disposable incomes. This means that, after introducing controls, virtually every successive birth cohort in Germany and the United States had increasing dispo…
Generational Inequalities and Welfare Regimes
This paper uses a new age period cohort model to show that among cohorts born between 1935 and 1975, cohorts born around 1950 are significantly above the income trend in most countries. However, such inequalities between generations are much stronger in conservative, continental European welfare states, compared to social democratic and liberal welfare states. As we show, this is because conservative welfare states expose some cohorts to high you…
Welfare Regimes, Cohorts, and the Middle Classes
In comparative perspective, the "middle class" is still an under-specified term. This chapter analyses four countries, contrasted by their welfare regime type, and by the development and transformations of the lower- and the upper-middle classes. Here the focus is put on social generations, because we observe highly contrasted dynamics between birth cohorts, in particular in the conservative welfare regimes of Continental Europe. There, the oppor…

The Long-Term Destabilization of Youth, Scarring Effects, and the Future of the Welfare Regime in Post-Trente Glorieuses France
"Youth" was once defined as the 15 to 24 year old age group. Today in France one sees a "first youth" (dependent on family and school) and a "second youth" in their twenties sharply divided between a successful elite with top degrees (or family wealth) and a highly marginalized workingclass. Between these extremes, a middle group often experiences frustration and anomie when their university degrees fail to launch the careers they desired. A "thi…
Social Generations, Life Chances and Welfare Regime Sustainability
The generational sustainability of welfare regimes is an explicit or implicit issue in most long-term analyses of Welfare State reforms (see for example: Esping-Andersen and al., 2002). In an ideal society, today’s individual contributions to social welfare are supposed to be balanced in different ways by his or her expected benefits, but we live in real configurations where strong structural disequilibria could occur, notably between generations…

Or les 25 dernières années nous ont confrontés à l'installation d'une fracture silencieuse. Le retour des classes sociales ?
For many sociologists, the death of class is an obvious process: the question of classes has almost disappeared from contemporary social sciences for the last two decades, particularly in France. The aim of this paper is reassess the empirical aspects of this problem. Two different periods clearly appear. On the one hand, the period of fast growth of the post-war era saw a decline of the objective disparities between social classes. On the other …
