President's Roundtable
This article is a collection of six revised essays from the 2023 Society for Ethnomusicology President's Roundtable “Tell Me a Story” with an introduction and conclusion to contextualize the essays as vehicles for teaching storywork. At the roundtable, we asked: What stories do ethnomusicologists experience, learn, carry, create, embody, and (re)tell? What atypical labors do stories perform that other forms of speech and writing do not? Which sto…

Tired of the everyday grind?Ever dream of a life of romantic adventure?Want to get away from it all?We offer you—Escape!Escape—designed to free you from the four walls of today for a half hour of high adventure ...These words, uttered by a mid-twentieth-century radio announcer with all the lurid intonation of a film noir gumshoe, open each of the ten episodes of the podcast ESC: Sonic Adventure in the Anthropocene, an arresting work of open-acces…
La musique a-t-elle causé la fin du monde
This essay seeks to clarify the relationship between music and environmental violence. After a reflection on the distortions and insights that different frames of reference produce, it places music within an expansive environmental register that encompasses the entirety of human history, up to and including our current era of "slow violence," industrial pollution, mass extinction, and global warming. Throughout, human musicking is presented as al…
Listening to War
This book studies the centrality of listening to the experience of modern warfare. Based on years of ethnographic interviews with US military service members and Iraqi civilians, as well as on direct observations of wartime Iraq, the book reveals how these populations learned to extract valuable information from the ambient soundscape while struggling with the deleterious effects that it produced in their ears, throughout their bodies, and in the…
Thanatosonics
This essay explores the relationship between sound, violence, and the sensorium within the context of the recent war in Iraq. It argues that, at extreme volumes or in extreme psychosocial circumstances, wartime sounds become untethered from their indexicality, losing much or all of their informational content. In these situations, sound becomes indistinguishable from violence itself. Drawing on the experiences of Iraqi civilians and US military s…
Sonic Samizdat
Magnitizdat was the slyly humorous nickname for the unofficial practice of dubbing and distributing reel-to-reel audio tapes in the post-Stalinist Soviet Union. In this article I reflect on magnitizdat's cultural significance through an examination of several amateur reel-to-reel recordings of avtorskaia pesnia, the musical genre most closely associated with the first generation of magnitizdat dubbers in the 1960s. After drawing parallels between…
Russia's New Anthem and the Negotiation of National Identity
