  • Constellations of practice in copper ingots from Zambia and northern Zimbabwe, cal. AD 500–1700

Jay Stephens, David Killick et al.•ARTICLE•Azania Archaeological Research in…•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 49

Rectangular, fishtail and croisette copper ingots have been found in many locations in Central and southern Africa where excavated samples date to between the fifth and eighteenth centuries cal. AD. For more than fifty years, scholars have debated whether these ingots were all made in the Central African Copperbelt, where there are many finds of matching moulds, or if moulds found in Zimbabwe show that copies were produced locally. Lead isotopic …

The central Meseta is a high plateau located in the heart of the Iberian Peninsula. Abundant evidence of Lower and Middle Palaeolithic occupations of the region contrasts with scarce evidence of a human presence during the early Upper Palaeolithic. On this basis, it has been suggested that climatic downturns triggered the temporary abandonment, or near abandonment, of the central Meseta during the Last Glacial period. We conducted three archaeolo…

  • Landforms, sediments, soil development, and prehistoric site settings on the Madaba‐Dhiban Plateau, Jordan

    Open Access•Carlos E Cordova, Chris Foley et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2004•Cited by: 5•References: 16

This paper examines recurrent spatial patterns of prehistoric sites in relation to landforms, alluvial fills, and soil development in the uplands and valleys of the Madaba and Dhiban Plateaus of Jordan. Mousterian lithics (Middle Paleolithic) are largely found on high strath terraces plateaus, where they are associated with red Mediterranean soils. In valleys, Upper Paleolithic sites are often associated with reworked loess deposits of the Dalala…

  • Probability Sampling Techniques for Investigation of African Iron Age Sites

Michael Bisson, Michael S Bisson et al.•ARTICLE•Azania Archaeological Research in…•1974•Cited by: 2•References: 3

This article emphasizes the utility of probability sampling techniques in archaeological research design. The problems inherent in casual sampling methods are discussed and the point is stressed that valid statistical inferences can only be made using unbiased data. Two methods of eliminating bias, simple random sampling and stratified sampling are described and two examples are put forward to illustrate their use
