  • Jurisdictional gerrymandering

    Open Access•Svetlana Zilberstein•ARTICLE•Social Problems•2026

This paper develops the concept of jurisdictional gerrymandering to explain how professionals selectively invoke boundaries around their expertise to frame their role and maintain authority in solving problems that extend beyond their jurisdiction. Drawing on a study of artificial intelligence (AI) model development for healthcare, I analyze how AI practitioners position their work in relation to health equity, an issue they acknowledge cannot be…

  • Coincidence of the routes of the age of great geographical discoveries and the distribution of microplastics and plastic debris in the oceans

Open Access•Gleb Zilberstein, Svetlana Zilberstein et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Maritime…•2026

This work looks at the coincidence between the navigation routes of the Age of Discovery (sixteenth to nineteenth centuries) and the distribution of modern microplastics and plastic waste in the oceans. Plastics in the oceans have been an additional factor in the Columbian Exchange and the changing health and biodiversity of the world's oceans. The ocean routes of the caravels and galleons of the Age of Discovery and the distribution of modern gi…

This analysis captures agentic mome…

  • Recreating a Plausible Future

    Open Access•Svetlana Zilberstein, M Lamont et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Science•2023•Cited by: 18•References: 26

This article analyzes how young adults draw on cultural resources to understand their identities, aspirations, and goals when taken-for-granted scripts of success are perceived as less desirable or achievable. Drawing on pragmatism, we propose the concept of 'plausible futures' to capture how people rearrange elements within cultural repertoires as a practical and moral project to define their identities, aspirations, and goals. We draw on interv…

In the present report, we offer a novel way for studying (via optical and digital means) features in Renaissance and Leonardo’s (and of course any other painter who followed this canon) paintings, based on a software that separately recognizes white, red, green, blue colors and measures the intensity of single bright spots in canvasses. After mapping the distribution of individual colors, the software proposes a trajectory considering the differe…

The confrontation lasted for most of the day and terminated with a victory of the Crusaders, proving Richard’s courage as a soldier and his skill as a commander while denting Saladin’s reputation as an invincible warrior. The site (toda…

With a focus on legal and other organizational actors beyond the state, this article seeks to expand the theory of conditions under which legal occupations will mobilize to fight for basic legal freedoms within states. Standard narratives on the relationship between art and urban development detail art networks as connected to sources of dominant economic, social, and cultural capital and complicit in gentrification trends. This research challenges the conventional model by investigating the relationship between grassroots art spaces, tied to marginal and local groups, and the political economy of development in the Chicago neighborhood of Pilsen.
