  • A factor analysis of body build in the rat

    Open Access•R H J Watson, P L Broadhurst•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1976•References: 11

Following a survey of the problems associated with the comparative study of measures of physique in domesticated and laboratory animals, techniques were developed for the measurement of body build in the adult albino laboratory rat ( Rattus norvegicus ). They involved anesthetisation of the animals and the use of calipers and a simple apparatus devised for the purpose. The 17 measures taken on 100 rats, 50 of each sex, are detailed and the reason…

  • Ethanol and the Acquisition of a Conditioned Avoidance Response in Selected Strains of Rats

    P L Broadhurst, HENRIK WALLGREN•ARTICLE•Quarterly Journal of Studies on…•1964

  • An Analysis of the Pursuit Rotor Learning of Chronic Psychotics

Open Access•P L Broadhurst, Elena Baracani et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1964

A sample of forty‐two chronic schizophrenics were randomly assigned to one of two groups given three sessions of either massed or spaced practice on a pursuit rotor, and a group of sixteen depressives were given massed practice only. The results suggest that there are differences between the learning curves of these groups when compared with those of normals. Notable among these differences is the absence of reminiscence after massed practice, an…

  • Litter Size, Emotionality, and Avoidance Learning

    Open Access•P L Broadhurst, Seymour Levine•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1963

In a recent experiment concerned with the interaction of genetic and ontogenetic determinants of adult behavior (Levine & Broadhurst, in press), rats from the Maudsley Reactive and Nonreactive strains which have been selected for emotional defecation, were subjected to controlled infantile stimulation (Levine, 1960) and compared with 40 nontreated controls for open-field emotionality and avoidance conditioning. Excluded from the main experiment w…

  • Behavioural Consistency in Strains of Rats Selectively Bred for Emotional Elimination

    Open Access•P L Broadhurst, Seymour Levine•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1963

An experiment is reported which confirms the difference in escape‐avoidance conditioning between rats of the two Maudsley selected strains. This finding constitutes a second in variance in the behaviour of these strains: the first, with which it is contrasted, related to differences in conditioned emotional responses. It is suggested that the two nevertheless indicate a consistent emotional responsiveness in these strains

  • Determinants of Emotionality in the Rat: Ii. Antecedent Factors

    Open Access•P L Broadhurst•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1958•Cited by: 1

A total of 112 rats (56 males and 56 females) is used to investigate the effects of some antecedent factors upon the defecation and ambulation scores derived from Hall's open‐field test of emotionality, given under precisely standardized conditions. Conditions of rearing and husbandry are similarly constant, except where systematically varied for experimental purposes. The results show that neither defecation nor ambulation is affected by systema…

  • Determinants of Emotionality in Rat: I. Situational Factors

    Open Access•P L Broadhurst•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1957•Cited by: 3

An experiment was designed to establish optimum conditions for using Hall's open-field test of emotionality in white rat. A large (N = 192) factorial design permitted simultaneous evaluation of following components of test which were thought to be productive of emotional responses: size of test arena, intensity of illumination and intensity of sound. effects of pre-trial shock, food deprivation and sex difference were also investigated. Other var…
