  • Are urban impacts on heavy rainfall amplified in mountainous regions

Open Access•D Flores, Marika Koukoula et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2026

Global evidence indicates that orography can exert a strong influence on rainfall, thereby giving rise to natural hazards such as flooding in mountain areas. Alongside orographic influences, urban areas can also act to intensify storms, but their impact on heavy rainfall in high elevations has not yet been investigated in detail. Here, we quantify the contribution of a high-altitude city to both rainfall intensification and its daytime and nightt…

  • The nature of a ‘forest transition’ in Thừa Thiên Huế Province, Central Vietnam – A study of land cover changes over five decades

    Open Access•Roland Cochard, Mathieu Gravey et al.•ARTICLE•Land Use Policy•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 119

Informed from historical case studies of land cover change and development in northern countries, forest transition (FT) theories have a tendency to precast specific conclusions. Considering the case of a so-called FT in Thừa Thiên Huế Province in tropical Central Vietnam, we investigated 1.) whether such a ‘FT’ indeed reflects a resurgence of genuine forest, 2.) whether the land cover changes can be explained through conventional ‘pathways’ of F…

  • Stalagmite evidence for Early Holocene multidecadal hydroclimate variability in Ethiopia

Open Access•Asfawossen Asrat, Andy Baker et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2022

A multiproxy oxygen and carbon isotope (δ 13 C and δ 18 O), growth rate, and trace element stalagmite paleoenvironmental record is presented for the Early Holocene from Ethiopia. The annually laminated stalagmite grew from 10.6 to 10.4 ka and from 9.7 to 9.0 ka with a short hiatus at ~9.25 ka. Statistically significant and coherent spectral frequencies in δ 13 C and δ 18 O are observed at 15–25 and 19–23 years, respectively. The observed ~1‰ ampl…

  • Reply to the comment by Heyard et al. titled “Imaginary carrot or effective fertiliser? A rejoinder on funding and productivity”

Open Access•Gregoire Mariethoz, Frédéric Herman et al.•ARTICLE•Scientometrics•2021

In their Comment about our previous paper They question both our methodology and our conclusions, comparing them to their own previous work and conclusions, which are different. We contest these statements and argue why they are unfounded

  • The imaginary carrot

Open Access•Gregoire Mariethoz, Frédéric Herman et al.•ARTICLE•Scientometrics•2021

The ability of researchers to raise funding is central to academic achievement. However, whether success in obtaining research funds correlates with the productivity, quality or impact of a researcher is debated. Here we analyse 10 years of grant funding by the Swiss National Science Foundation in Earth and Environmental Sciences, and compare it to the publication record of the researchers who were awarded the funds. No significant statistical co…
