Examining an area between two zones that research historically regarded separately-Central Chile and the country's semi-arid north-presents an opportunity to consider, on several socio-spatial scales, the various degrees and characteristics of integration shown by the communities in question. In this article, we use excavation and material analyses from seven archaeological sites in Huaquén, located to the north of the Petorca and La Ligua river …

  • Remains of fill and floor? contextual taphonomy in a semi-subterranean structure in the hyperarid coast of the Atacama Desert, Chile

    Open Access•Sebastián Yrarrázaval, X Power et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 30

Architectural features and shell-matrix sites are one of the most challenging records for archaeological interpretation, due to their intricate stratification and complex depositional paths. In the hyperarid coast of the Atacama Desert, hunter-gatherer-fisher developed standardized stone-built architectural features mostly built on or directly related to shell-matrix deposits during the Late Archaic period (5700 – 4000 cal. years B.P.). These str…

    Open Access•D Salazar, Flora Vilches•ARTICLE•Revista Chilena de Antropología•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This article presents a synthesis and discussion regarding congenital pathologies and developmental defects identified in the axial skeletons of individuals from different archaeological periods on the Antofagasta coast. Despite the small number of cases in the analyzed sample (n = 6), the research compares that figure with the cases reported for the coastal area of Arica and Tarapacá, revealing no statistically significant differences between th…

  • Fish vertebrae as archeological biomarkers of past marine ecological conditions: Comparison of mercury levels in Chilean swordfish between the Middle Holocene and the modern period

    Open Access•Sebastian Biton‐porsmoguer, Marc Bouchoucha et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 7

The ocean has always been a source of inspiration for past and present civilizations, especially for those involved in fishing activities. The regular fishing of large pelagic fish by past societies using harpoons has been demonstrated, with several studies reporting the discovery of an important fishery of large pelagic fish (including swordfish) dating from as early as the sixth millennium BCE on the North Chilean Pacific Coast. The swordfish (…

  • Soils in ancient irrigated agricultural terraces in the Atacama Desert, Chile

    Open Access•Jonathan A Sandor, Gary Huckleberry et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 9

The Atacama Desert is among the driest places on Earth, yet ancient agricultural systems are present in the region. Here, we present a study of terraced agricultural soils in the high‐altitude eastern margin of the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, mainly dating to the Late Intermediate Period (ca. 950–1400 AD) and Inka period (ca. 1400–1536 AD). Terraced fields were compartmentalized to distribute limited irrigation water originating mainly from…

Open Access•X Power, Luca Sitzia et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 57

Hunter‐gatherer architectural practices are one of the main sources of data to understand the complex land use of these societies. In the hyperarid Atacama Desert coast (Northern Chile), hunter‐gatherers‐fishers developed standardized stone‐built architecture during the Late Archaic period (∼5,700–4,000 cal years BP), interpreted so far as sedentary villages or long‐term campsites. Nevertheless, the lack of site formation process studies and syst…

Open Access•Pía Sapiains, Andrew Menzies et al.•ARTICLE•Estudios Atacameños Arqueología y…•2020•Cited by: 2

Northern Chile is known for its large-scale contemporary copper exploitation. Archaeological evidence indicates that such exploitation is not only a modern occurrence but has been ongoing since at least the Late Archaic Period. In order to identify the raw mineral materials used in pre-Hispanic mining and metallurgical production processes we performed an automated mineralogy analysis (QEMSCAN). The samples are from the Collahuasi mining-metallur…

Sculpted stone models or maquetas are a distinctive material expression of the inca occupation of the Atacama Desert. In this paper, we characterize a site with stone maquetas located along the Loa River above the town of Chiu-Chiu. Based on its formal attributes, the site can be dated to the Inca period. We consider the site's internal spatial organization and relationship with the landscape to discuss how the maquetas acted as intermediaries be…
