The ‘humanised zoo’
Wildlife conservation seems unaffected by decolonization movements that recently led to removing or vandalizing several statues of geographers and colonizers worldwide. Instead, we observe an increased emphasis on total protection of species and habitats that, although strategic in a period of environmental crisis, may have grossly negative impacts on living standards of local indigenous communities. In this regard, we should decolonize society, …

Experiential Key Species for Nature-disconnected Generations
In urbanized contexts, a progressive disconnection from nature, mainly experienced by the youngest generation, is evident. In this sense, detection of species more suitable for a nature-related experience becomes of primary importance to increase pro-environmental behaviors in children. Here, we propose a simple, quick, and explorative procedure for selecting a set of Experiential Key Species (EKS). Two practical examples are provided for two con…

Habitat Suitability and Landscape Structure
Species distribution models have recently become important tools in ecological research. Prediction of suitable habitats for threatened and endangered species is essential for the conservation and management of their native habitats. A landscape scale approach is relevant for biodiversity conservation since landscape planning and management are generally conducted at wide spatial scales, focusing on areas with complex landscape configuration as a…
Diversity Indices as ‘Magic’ Tools in Landscape Planning
Diversity indices are often considered by landscape planners as easy to calculate and informative for planning procedures. The main objective of many landscape planners using such indices is ‘to obtain the magic number’. The misinterpretation of the real significance of diversity values that this indicates is alarming because it could induce conceptual traps and the promotion of poor strategies for ecosystem and landscape management with serious …
Selecting Focal Species in Ecological Network Planning following an Expert-Based Approach
In connectivity conservation and ecological network planning, the selection of focal fragmentation-sensitive species represents an a priori step. Despite their strategic role, selection of focal species has often been carried out following non-objective approaches. If this is done, actions of planning and conservation, especially in relation to biodiversity conservation, could be ineffective. We propose an expert-based approach to select focal sp…
Nature reserve selection on forest fragments in a suburban landscape (Rome, Central Italy)
A set of avian forest species, known from the literature as fragmentation-sensitive, was considered as the target in nature reserve planning following a conceptual framework. Their abundance was investigated in an ‘archipelago’ of oak woodland fragments embedded in a suburban landscape matrix of central Italy. None of the four species were found in any wood fragment smaller than 10 ha. The presence/absence analysis of woodland fragments studied s…
