Presidential Wives and Soft Power in Mexico in the López Mateos (1958–1964) and Echeverría (1970–1976) Eras
In twentieth-century Mexico, presidents were considered the strongest branch of political power. In contrast, First Ladies played a trivial role. This article presents two exceptions to this norm: the contributions of the two First Ladies Eva Sámano de López Mateos (1958–64) and María Esther Zuno de Echeverría (1970–76). Through an examination of press coverage and oral testimonies, I argue that these women represented a feminine facet of the Par…
The body as a mirror of inequality in México during the second half of the twentieth century
This paper examines how variations in the height and health of Mexicans during the second half of the twentieth century reflect the evolution of economic inequality, as its effects have repercussions on the health and nutritional conditions of the population. The average height of Mexican adults had a modest increase with respect to the possibilities of human plasticity. These anthropometric variations were the result of the incorporation of adva…
Migrant Self-Selection and Random Shocks
We study the impact of the 1907 Panic, the most severe economic crisis before the Great Depression, on the selection of Mexican immigration. We find that migrants were positively selected on height before the crisis. This pattern changed to negative selection during the crisis but returned to positive selection afterward. Adjustments in selection were partially mediated by theenganche, a historical labor-recruiting system that reduced migration c…
Gendered Capitalism
Gendered Capitalism is a unique combination of interdisciplinary research—including business history, economic cultural history, management studies, international business, women's history, gender studies, and the history of technology—from a comparative and global perspective. Paula de la Cruz-Fernández offers a study of international business as much as of the home insofar as it explains gendered marketing structures and gender-specific adverti…
Height and Inequality in Post-1950 Mexico
Using data from two national surveys (ENSA, 2000; ENSANUT, 2006) we assess the evolution of biological standards of living of the Mexican population born during the second half of the 20 th century. Our results show that there was an improvement in living standards reflected in an increase in stature, but this amelioration was limited. We observe differences across socio-economic strata, across educational levels, and between men and women. Persi…
Volunteering for a Cause
In Volunteering for a Cause, Silvia Arrom unveils the history of the Mexican Society of Saint Vincent de Paul and reassesses the religious history of Mexico from 1844 to 1913. By tracing the foundation and development of this charitable society Arrom presents a history of Catholics that has been overlooked by traditional historiography, which has focused on the efforts of the liberal governments to undermine the power of the Catholic Church and d…

Measuring Inequality in Living Standards with Anthropometric Indicators
By analyzing the Mexican case for the period 1850–1986, we argue that the average adult stature of a population can be used as a tool to analyze inequality in living standards. The findings suggest that the secular trend in stature is related to cycles of economic growth, inequality, wars and institutional changes. Such processes affect socioeconomic groups and regions differently and generate unequal living standard patterns. Moreover, male adul…
Physical stature of men in eighteenth century Mexico
Growth with Inequality
This article focuses on trends in the adult heights of various sectors of Mexican society between 1850 and 1950 as a proxy for their biological and material standards of living. The evolution of biological standards of living is an alternative way to assess whether or not economic development after 1850 was beneficial to the population, using a proxy that relies on a basic natural characteristic, adult height. The recruitment records of the Mexic…
