Eritreja, moja dežela
The article analyses the representation of distant others in Eritreja photoreporatge, which ran for ten consecutive issues in Mladina magazine between August and November 1988 and is considered to be the most extensive photoreportage ever to be published in Slovene printed media. Multimodal framing analysis, complemented by semi-structured interviews with authors, is applied to examine verbal and visual strategies for construction of otherness. E…
Symbolic photographs” as floating and empty signifiers: Iconic transformation of news photography
The article discusses the use of “symbolic photographs” – images in news reporting which have no direct connection to reported events – in news reporting. Such images deviate not only from the self-professed journalistic norm of factual reporting but also fundamentally challenge the act of civic eyewitnessing constitutive for visual journalism. Concepts of floating and empty signifiers from Discourse Theory are applied to “symbolic photographs” t…

Looking for Mr Hyde: The protest paradigm, violence and (de)legitimation of mass political protests
This article analyses the shifting use of violence as a framing device that determines the legitimacy of political actors in mainstream media coverage of mass political protests. Building on an analysis of news reports on the largest political protests in Slovenia in the past two decades, which lasted between November 2012 and March 2013, we show how violence can be used as a ‘floating’ framing device that articulates the legitimacy or illegitima…
The Tyranny of the Empty Frame: Reluctance to use citizen-produced photographs in online journalism
This study explores the notion of the "tyranny of the empty frame" within the online departments of the two leading Slovenian newspapers, Delo and Dnevnik, where online journalists—newsworkers with little or no training or experience in photojournalism—are required to provide each news item with at least one photograph. By adopting newsroom observation and in-depth interviews with online journalists working for Delo and Dnevnik, we investigate pa…
Slovene Film, National Identity and the Celluloid Hegemony of the Mythical Post-Independence Time
The paper addresses a central tendency of Slovene film production of the first decade and a half of the country's independency which is to avoid dealing with its specific socio-historical context of post-communist transition. This ‘lost baggage of transition’ is significant for two reasons: firstly, its widespread adoption closely resembles a generic blueprint that binds this body of auteur films into a coherent whole, and secondly, because this …
Orientalism as news: Pictorial representations of the US attack on Iraq in Delo
The article addresses the issue of essentially Orientalistic pictorial coverage of the US invasion of Iraq in the Slovene daily newspaper, Delo. The study showed that such framing was not solely the result of western control over the images of war but was, to a large extent, a consequence of a set of specific sociohistorical factors, namely the particular political situation at the time of the invasion and the workings of the mechanisms of Sloven…
