  • The Free Speech Principle

    Open Access•A Brown•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Law &…•2025

This paper argues that what scholars call ‘the free speech principle’ is not one principle but a slew of principles, and that these principles harbour several important differences that have remained largely unremarked upon, namely: (i) extending vs. limiting principles; (ii) comparative vs. non-comparative principles; and (iii) monistic vs. pluralistic principles. The paper also critically assesses certain generalisations that people might be te…

  • Reverse hate speech, pragmatics, and the authority problem

    Open Access•A Brown•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Social Criticism•2024•References: 32

Applying speech act theory to the phenomenon of hate speech, some philosophers seek to explain how even ordinary people can obtain the capacity, power, or authority to oppress, subordinate, or marginalise the targets of their verbal attacks. Such explanations are answers to what is called the authority problem. However, hitherto these philosophers have focused exclusively on standard examples of racist speech in which members of historically oppr…

  • Cosmopolitan Democratic and Communicative Rights

    Open Access•A Brown, Sune Laegaard•ARTICLE•Human Rights Review•2020•References: 16

During the Danish cartoons controversy in 2005–2006, a group of ambassadors to Denmark representing eleven predominantly Muslim countries requested a meeting with the Danish Prime Minister, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, to protest against the cartoons. Rasmussen interpreted their viewpoint as one of demanding limits to freedom of speech and he ignored their request for a meeting. Drawing on this case study, the article argues that it is an appropriate, …

    Open Access•A Brown•ARTICLE•Journal of African American Studies•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 4

In the context of African American enslavement and the legacy of that enslavement, do some uses of the word “nigger” possess the power to enslave? It goes without saying that the words “negro,” “nigger,” “colored,” and “black” are an important part of the language and discourse of African American enslavement—as terms used by slave owners, slave traders, slave catchers, and slaves themselves; as terms still used today by people living with the le…

  • Fiction/Non-Fiction, Or

    Open Access•A Brown, Andrew Steen•ARTICLE•Knowledge Cultures•2018

Architecture is constructed not only in its images of objects, but also in its idealization of authorship. While the one–to–one association of Architect with “their” Architecture perpetuates the illusion of the discipline’s agency and fosters impossible expectations of absolute control, broadly speaking, the originary and utopian impulse remains a fundamental component of an architect’s identity. The following paper confronts the largely unelabor…

  • Global equality of resources and the problem of valuation

    A Brown•ARTICLE•Critical Review of International…•2016•References: 6

The principle that every individual on the planet has a claim to an equal share of Earth’s natural resources has an intuitive attraction. Yet the Principle of Natural Resource Equality is not without its problems. This article focuses on the problem of valuation. Unless and until its adherents are able to develop an adequate theoretical mechanism for determining the comparative value of two or more bundles of natural resources the principle lacks…

  • Marx on Exploitation

    Open Access•A Brown, Alexander L Brown•ARTICLE•Rethinking Marxism•2014•References: 10

Despite exhaustive discussion among scholars of Karl Marx, there remains significant disagreement regarding the best conception of capitalist exploitation. This article tries to move the debate forward by drawing on the ethical theory of Immanuel Kant. The aim is to give moralizing Marxists a foundation in Kantian ethics for the injustice of capitalist exploitation that they already instinctively believe in. As well as using the formula of the en…

This report presents the main results of research activities carried out at Çaltılar Höyük, northern Lycia, southwest Turkey, between 2008 and 2010. During this period, an international team undertook topographic, archaeological and geophysical surveys, together with artefact studies and analyses, aimed at determining the nature and extent of occupation at the site, and offering new data about the settlement history and material culture of this r…

  • Ceremonial Culture in Pre-Modern Europe

    A Brown, Aidan T Brown•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2008•Cited by: 1

In this volume, Nicholas Howe has assembled a valuable collection of essays, each one of which contributes to our understanding of ceremonial culture. Margot Fassler grounds her general insights into the working of medieval processions in a full discussion of the processional life of twelfth-century Chartres. Liturgical processions, she argues, were often forms of the adventus ceremony, but this did not restrict the range of possible meanings whi…

  • A materialist development of some recent contributions to the labour theory of value

    A Brown, Andrew J Brown•ARTICLE•Cambridge Journal of Economics•2007

The paper offers a novel interpretation and affirmation of the opening arguments of Capital, answering the fundamental but neglected question of why labour is the substance of value. Marx's arguments require that two philosophical threads, often separated in the literature on value, be woven together. The argument that value is the intrinsic ‘content’ making commodities exchangeable employs the thread of realism. The argument that abstract labour…

  • The Demise of Communist East Europe

    A Brown, A H Brown•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2006

BOTH Robin Okey and David Marples have produced very competent surveys of the demise of Communism in Eastern Europe and of the end of the Soviet Union. Okey's book is the more ambitious of the two, and not only in its wider geographical scope. It contains perceptive analyses of the sharp socio-political differences between one part of Communist Europe and another, some of which have re-emerged in post-Communist Europe. The most surprising bibliog…

The paper evaluates the effectiveness of five methods used by municipalities to enhance integration in the context of integrated development planning in South Africa: conceptualisation of the planning and development process within a Local Agenda 21 (LA 21) process; complex issue identification and causal analysis as a basis for formulating strategies and projects; spatial frameworks to guide investment and development; linking of planning to imp…

Whilst it can be regarded as moving towards a “justice” model in proposing the abolition of borstal training, when taken together with its other provisions there are strong indications of a deeply rooted ambivalence. To advocate greater use of non‐custodial meas…
