Mechanisms of emotional reactivity to media entertainments
This chapter commences with a critical examination of proposals seeking to explain emotions from witnessing dramatic events, proposals that hitherto were treated as truisms. First addressed is the question of why real emotions can be evoked by events that are known to be unreal. The question is answered by literally reversing the established view. Second, the Freudian adage that emotions arise from identifi cation with others is scrutinized and i…

Selective Exposure to Communication
Informational Utility and Selectiveexposure to Entertainment Media
Upon cursory reflection, most people seem to agree that when it comes to consuming entertainment, individuals have distinctive tastes. These tastes tend to be thought of as comparatively stable, lasting preferences for certain kinds of music, comedy, drama, sports, and the like. The formation of these tastes is usually deemed a mystery, however. Regarding good taste or bad taste, people are said to have it or not. Attributions such as these certa…

Excitation Transfer Theory
The theory of excitation transfer addresses sequential dependencies in emotional reactivity. Specifically, it predicts an enhancement of emotional reactions to immediately present emotion‐arousing situations by portions of excitation that are left over from preceding related or unrelated emotion‐arousing situations (→ emotion; Excitation and Arousal). The theory operationalizes excitation primarily as dominance of sympathetic activity in the auto…

Children's Sex-Stereotyped Self-Socialization Through Selective Exposure to Entertainment
Chinese, German, and U.S. American 4- to 6-year-old boys and girls were asked to select videos of children stories that they would most like to see. Choices were either between pairs of story videos presenting aggressive versus peaceful, nurturing content, with male or female sex of story protagonists held constant, or between pairs of videos featuring male versus female protagonists, with aggressive or peaceful story content held constant. Acros…
Effects of Lead Framing on Selective Exposure to Internet News Reports
With headlines and texts held constant, the subheads of articles embedded in an Internet newsmagazine were manipulated in an overview from which articles could be selected. In a control condition, the lead, indicating deplorable happenings, was framed in a factual manner. In the other conditions, the leads were framed either in terms of conflict between feuding parties, the unfolding of disastrous occurrences, the emotional upheaval and agony suffer…
Theory of Affective Dynamics
I stand in awe of my academic progeny and some less immediate relations for finding common ground for this Festschrift in the contestable concept of emotion. Might I have had a hand in their choice of such focus? In paraphrasing a media-influence cliché, I suspect that with my teachings I probably failed to convince this group of scholars of the merits of my particular theoretical stand on emotion, but I apparently managed to make everybody think…
Appeal of Love Themes in Popular Music
The relationship between romantic satisfaction versus discontent and a preference for music celebrating versus lamenting love is explored. The satisfaction/discontent was ascertained in 60 college undergraduate women and men who later freely listened to music from a sampling of selections. The duration of their self-determined exposure to love-celebrating versus love-lamenting music was unobtrusively recorded by computer software. Romantically sa…

Mood Management via the Digital Jukebox
This study took popular music from the Top 30 charts and, in a pretest, evaluated its energy and joyfulness as musical qualities. The findings were used to create sets of musical selections that were either low or high in these qualities. In the experiment proper, respondents were placed in states of bad, neutral, or good moods and then, in an ostensibly independent study, provided the opportunity to freely choose from the sets of musical selecti…
Exemplification Theory of Media Influence
This chapter provides an overview of the essentials of exemplification theory and research. After tracing the evolutionary roots of the exemplification process and considering its ecological ramifications in contemporary society, the theory and pertinent implications are elaborated. The focus is on the representational accuracy of reports of relevant social phenomena and on the heuristic processing of exemplar aggregations in forming assessments …
Effects of Photographs on the Selective Reading of News Reports
Respondents examined an experimental news magazine composed of manipulated and unmanipulated articles about relevant social issues. The manipulated articles either featured no photograph, an innocuous photograph, or a photograph depicting others' impending or manifest victimization. Respondents were free to read whatever they deemed of interest. Time restriction did not allow them, however, to read all available articles in their entirety. Under …
Emotional reactions to narratives
Reading between the Photographs
A news report on an Appalachian tick disease was differently illustrated. It either contained no images, an image of ticks, or this tick image plus three child victims. The victims were ethnically balanced (two White, one Black) or not (either all White or all Black). The text did not make any reference to the victims' ethnicity. Respondents assessed the risk of contracting the disease for children of different ethnicity. Partiality in pictoriall…
Mood Management in the Context of Selective Exposure Theory
In this chapter, the hedonistic premise of mood-management theory is examined and expanded to account for seemingly nonhedonistic choices of media content. Counterhedonistic message selection is considered in the context of selective-exposure theory. Informational utility is invoked as a choice-driving force that complements content selection. The confounded operation of hedonistic and informational choice determinants is detailed for various dom…

Editors Zillmann and Vorderer have assembled scholars from psychology, sociology, and communication to provide a broad examination of the primary function of media entertainment--the attainment of gratification. Chapters included here address vital aspects of media entertainment and summarize pertinent findings, providing an overview of what i…
Exemplification Theory
Exemplification is a ubiquitous phenomenon in communication. It permeates informative, educational and persuasive endeavors in both interpersonal exchanges and media presentations. Despite this, it has received little attention in communication research. Although its empirical exploration has begun and shown considerable promise, especially in the news context, a theoretical foundation has been missing. This essay attempts to remedy the neglect b…
The Gender Gap in the Enjoyment of Televised Sports
Does spectator gender exert an appreciable influence on the enjoyment of sports? Are men generally more intrigued with athletic competition, or might there be a gender gap in enjoyment that is specific to particular sports? The findings of the present investigation show that male and female spectators enjoy distinctly different types of sports. Males were found to be partial to football, ice hockey, basketball, soccer, baseball, boxing, and karat…

Mood Management Through Communication Choices
Enhancement of experienced sexual arousal in response to erotic stimuli through misattribution of unrelated residual excitation
In a pretest, three phases of recovery from a standard physical exercise were determined. In Phase 1, subjects experienced high levels of physiological excitation and recognized that their arousal was due to exercise. In Phase 2, subjects maintained substantial excitatory residues from the exercise but felt that their arousal had returned to base level. In Phase 3, subjects' excitatory responses had decayed, and they knew they had recovered from …

Mood Influence on the Appeal of Bad News
Respondents were placed into a bad or good mood and then provided with reading choices. They chose magazine articles that featured either bad or good news. In agreement with theoretical expectations, women in a bad mood were drawn to good news, sampling significantly more of it than women in a good mood. Men did not show this preference, however. Gender-specific selection of news stories was further evident in that women in a bad mood sampled les…
Effects of Prolonged Consumption of Pornography on Family Values
Male and female students and nonstudents were exposed to videotapes featuring common, nonviolent pornography or innocuous content. Exposure was in hourly sessions in six consecutive weeks. In the seventh week, subjects participated in an ostensibly unrelated study on societal institutions and personal gratifications. Marriage, cohabitational relationships, and related issues were judged on an especially created Value-of-Marriage questionnaire. Th…

The Thrill of a Close Game
Students watched live broadcasts of eight games of the 1995 NCAA men's basketball tournament. They reported their enjoyment of second-half play, which was either extremely, substantially, moderately, or minimally suspenseful (as defined by point separations of 1-4, 5-9, 10-14, and 15 or more, respectively, during the second half of games). Men's enjoyment proved to be a monotonic function of suspense about outcome. Women's enjoyment paralleled th…
Women Sports Reporters
A sports reporter's perceived competence and actual persuasiveness were examined as a function of reporter's gender, audience member's gender, athletes' gender, and communication medium. Two different sports commentaries were created, concerning men's basketball and women's gymnastics. One of the two commentaries was presented to each respondent, either in the form of a sports magazine column or as a radio sportscast. In the commentary, either a …

The Effect of Affective State and Emotional Arousal on Music Appreciation
To test the effect of variations in subjects' affective and emotional states on their subsequent appreciation of music, subjects were exposed to one of four film segments which had been selected and pretested to effect a factorial variation in (a) hedonic tone (positive, negative) and (b) excitatory potential (low, high) and then heard and rated three musical selections. A hedonic-contrast effect was observed for the song heard immediately after …

Excitation and hedonic valence in the effect of erotica on motivated Intermale aggression
The excitatory potential (low, high), the hedonic valence (negative, positive), and the type of content (erotic, non‐erotic) of visual stimuli were varied in a factorial design. Male subjects were provoked by a same‐sex peer, exposed to communication or, in a no‐exposure control, made to wait for a period of time equal to that of communication exposure, and then provided with an opportunity to retaliate against their annoyer. High excitatory pote…

The Sequential Expansion of a Decision Model in a Spatial Context
A brief introduction to behavioral models in geography and the other social sciences is given, and the use of the spatial concept explained. Simple examples of decision models are described. The authors then discuss ways of increasing the complexity of these basic models. The case of the expansion of a fire within a theater is considered in detail, as representative of many similar situations. This model is then further expanded, and the addition…
