    Seinen ersten, 1971 erschienenen Roman widmete der Verfasser einer der bestimmenden Erfahrungen des eigenen Lebens, der des Exils. Mphahleles schon 1968 vollendeter Roman wurde in Südafrika zunächst verboten; im Zuge einer einzigartigen – und umstrittenen – Entscheidung kehrte Mphahlele 1977, also lange vor dem Ende der Apartheid, nach Südafrika zurück, wo die Zensurbehörde das Verbot 1983 aufhob.

    Das 1907 erschienene, zum Teil autobiographische Werk des jungen Autors stellt die Mythologie und die traditionellen Sitten und Gebräuche der Basotho den Glaubenssätzen des von den Weißen eingeführten Christentums gegenüber. Die Verwendung des allegorischen Grundmotivs der Pilgerfahrt ist wohl John Bunyans Erbauungsbuch The Pilgrim's Progress (1678) nachempfunden, das Mofolo in Englisch und Südsotho vorlag.
