Parental Alienation and Generalized Anxiety Symptoms in Adolescents and Young People
The current study examined whether the association between parental alienation (mother/father/both parents) and young people’s GAD symptoms varies as a function of pet attachment. A further aim was to explore whether there are species-level differences of this moderating effect. Using data from 198 young pet owners (mean age 21.21 years) who completed online self-report questionnaires, the findings revealed that higher levels of parental alienati…
Navigating Motherhood and Mental Health
Care-experienced mothers represent a vulnerable population at the intersection of complex childhood adversity and the challenges of parenthood, making them a crucial focus for research on mental health. The current study aimed to explore how care-experienced women perceive and manage the impact of motherhood on their mental health. Using interpretative phenomenological analysis, we examined how care-experienced mothers interpret and make sense of…
Children's Comfort From Pets During the Covid-19 Pandemic
This study focuses on the role of pets on children during COVID-19, specifically investigating the perceived comfort received by children from pets during this stressful time. Evaluation of the Animal Guardians Program
Childhood animal harm is associated with poor psychological outcomes and may co-occur with delinquency and violent behavior. Despite this, there are few established interventions for childhood animal harm and no research evaluating their effectiveness. This study is an evaluation of Animal Guardians, a targeted educational intervention delivered by the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty against Animals (Scottish SPCA) for children who…
An Evaluation of a Canine Welfare Education Intervention for Primary School Children
This study evaluated the effectiveness of a canine welfare education intervention, "Mr T's Tickles Workshop," for improving 8- to 9-year-old children's canine emotion recognition, their belief about canine sentience, their knowledge of canine welfare needs, their attitudes toward cruelty to canines, and their attachment to pets. "Mr T's Tickles Workshop" was a one-off intervention comprising a 1.5-hour workshop of welfare activities delivered to …
Teacher-Student Relationships in Childhood as a Protective Factor against Adolescent Delinquency up to Age 17
In this paper we examined the impact of the quality of teacher-student relationships at age 10 on young people’s delinquency at ages 13, 15, and 17 utilizing propensity-score matching. The young people were matched based on 105 characteristics, measured at ages 7 to 10. The sample comprised 1483 (49.4% female) adolescents representing around 80 different countries of origin, residing in Zurich, Switzerland. We found that young people who reported…
Rabbit Rescuers
This study evaluated the effectiveness of a Scottish SPCA animal welfare education intervention, "Rabbit Rescuers," on 5- to 7-year-old children's belief in animal minds, rabbit welfare knowledge, attitudes toward cruelty, and attachment to pets. "Rabbit Rescuers" was a one-week intervention comprising daily 15-min rabbit welfare activities delivered in school by classroom teachers. The activities were designed to be age-appropriate and covered k…
The sustainability of knowledge brokerage of the mental health improvement outcomes framework in Scotland
This is a follow-up study to Reid et al (2017) which considered the barriers and facilitators of getting knowledge into policy when using a knowledge brokering approach. The previous study analysed the use of strategies to reduce barriers to the use of evidence in mental health strategy planning in Scotland using outcome frameworks. The main facilitators highlighted were the importance of local champions, cooperation within partnership networks, …
