  • Is Sport Sustainable?-It Depends

    Open Access•Jan Ove Tangen•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 25

Is sport sustainable? Could sport be sustainable? Is there hope? The short answer is: it depends. This article discusses the six most essential issues on which answers to the questions above depend. First, it depends on what we already know about sport and sustainability. Second, it depends on how we observe or define sport and sustainability, respectively. Third, it depends on the ontology and epistemology on which the definitions and theories a…

  • Niklas Luhmann, System Theory and Sport

Ansgar Thiel, Jan Ove Tangen•CHAPTER•Routledge Handbook of the…•2015

System theory is the basis for many more sociological analyses of sport. Sociological system theory is closely linked with Niklas Luhmann, a renowned sociologist, who published countless books and articles on this subject, mostly in German. Luhmann argues that the conventions of quantitative empirical research have fundamental shortcomings. From the outset, the use of functionalist methods played a central role in Luhmann’s long-term project. Soc…

  • The Spread of a Rumour – the Growth and Diffusion of Golf in Norway

Jan Ove Tangen, Roy M Istad•ARTICLE•European Journal for Sport and…•2012•References: 4

This article discusses the spread and growth of Norwegian golf from 1985 to 2005. Finding that the number of golf players is following a shape that resembles a logistic growth curve, we look at the governing processes behind this development. We use the metaphor of ‘spreading the rumour’ to symbolise this development, seeing golf as an innovation that has been diffused in Norwegian society mostly via word of mouth. However, in order to explain the…

  • Embedded Expectations, Embodied Knowledge and the Movements That Connect: A System Theoretical Attempt to Explain the Use and Non-Use of Sport Facilities

    Open Access•Jan Ove Tangen•ARTICLE•International Review for the…•2004•Cited by: 6•References: 3

In this article I propose another way of studying the use and non-use of sport facilities. I argue that sport facilities embed expectations observable to individuals who are forced to meet these expectations or not. I also claim that our choices concerning the use or non-use of a sport facility are grounded in our embodied knowledge, a knowledge that is not easy to make conscious. My last claim is that movements connect the embedded expectations …

  • Doping in Norwegian Gyms: A Big Problem

At the end of 1993 there was carried out an investigation on the extent of doping in Norwegian gyms. The main results from the investigation are: Around 2% use or have used drugs and 20% reported knowledge of other using drugs at the gym. In this article we discuss the methodology that was used and the findings from the investigation in relation to other surveys, both Norwegian and foreign studies. The findings are also basis for a more sociologi…

  • Gender and Sport in Norwegian Mass Media

Open Access•Kari Fasting, Jan Ove Tangen et al.•ARTICLE•International Review of Sport…•1983

The purpose of the article is to analyse how female sports are presented in television and newspapers in Norway. This is done in order to clarify whether or not the mass media lend support to a traditional inhibiting image to female sport participation. The results of the content analysis show that stereotyping masculine and feminine language were seldom used in describing female and male sport per formers. The quantitative image of gender and sp…
