Intergenerational mobility, intergenerational effects, sibling correlations, and equality of opportunity
Occupational challenges and adaptations of vulnerable EU citizens from Romania begging in Sweden
Introduction: People from European Union (EU) countries such as Latvia, Romania and Bulgaria who beg on the streets have become a common part of the townscape in Sweden. While demanding situations in their home countries drive them abroad to earn their living, those who turn to begging still face challenges in their everyday lives. Additional knowledge is needed, from their perspective, about the occupational challenges of begging, as well as how…
The Contribution of Early‐life Versus Labour Market Factors to Intergenerational Income Persistence
We explore whether differences in intergenerational income mobility between the UK and Sweden show up early in life, finding stronger associations between parental income and birthweight, height and school performance in the UK. We investigate whether these differentials can account for the country difference in income mobility. While differences in the associations in birthweight and height are too weak to matter, school performance does account…
How older people perceive and experience sense of security when moving into and living in a nursing home
Sense of security is important throughout the lifespan not at least in advanced age with increased risks of functional declines and decreased social capital. Despite this, knowledge concerning older person’s perceptions and experiences of sense of security when moving into nursing homes is scarce. This study is a longitudinal, descriptive, exploratory case study with in-depth interviews and observations of three older persons in the age of 87, 88…

Intergenerational Income Mobility and the Role of Family Background

Section 4 explains the measures used to describe family associations in income while Section 5 offers a cross-national overview of recent estimates of famil…
Validating the Model of Lifestyle Balance on a Working Swedish Population
An analysis of data from a previously conducted grounded theory study exploring perceptions of life balance among 19 working adults without recent long term sick leave was carried out. The aim of this secondary analysis was to use these perceptions of life balance to validate the Model of Lifestyle Balance proposed by Matuska and Christiansen. For the validation, a matrix was used. The results showed that Matuska and Christiansen's five need-base…

Perceptions of Life Balance Among a Working Population in Sweden
A life in balance is commonly related to health and well-being. However, our knowledge regarding the perceptions of life balance among the general population is limited. Our aim was to explore the perception of life balance among working people without recent long-term sick leave. Individual interviews were conducted with 7 men and 12 women and analyzed according to grounded theory, aiming at achieving a description. The results showed that life …
Unionization and the Evolution of the Wage Distribution in Sweden
Using the 1968, 1981, and 2000 Swedish Level of Living Surveys, the authors examine the evolution of the wage distribution in Sweden over the periods 1968-1981 and 1981-2000. The first period was the heyday of the Swedish solidarity wage policy with strong equalization clauses in the central wage agreements. During the second period, there was more flexibility for firms to adjust wages to reflect conditions such as labor shortages in particular f…

Parental Separation and Children's Educational Attainment
This paper analyses whether the commonly found negative relationship between parental separation in childhood and educational outcomes is causal or due mainly to selection. We use data on about 100,000 Swedish full biological siblings, born in 1948–63, and perform cross‐section and sibling‐difference estimations. Outcomes are measured as educational attainment in 1996. Our cross‐section analysis shows the expected negative and significant relatio…
Is There a Glass Ceiling in Sweden?
Using 1998 data, we show that the gender log wage gap in Sweden increases throughout the wage distribution and accelerates in the upper tail. We interpret this as a strong glass ceiling effect. We use quantile regression decompositions to examine whether this pattern can be ascribed primarily to gender differences in labor market characteristics or in the rewards to those characteristics. Even after extensive controls for gender differences in ag…

Rising Female Labour Force Participation and the Distribution of Family Income-the Swedish Experience
This paper analyses how rising labour force participation of marned women in Sweden during the 1970s affected the distribution of family income. We use the squared coefficient of variation and compare the dispersion of family (factor) income with the dispersion of marned men's income We find an equalizing effect of wives' income, in the sense that family income is more equal than husbands' income. Furthermore, the equalizing effect of female inco…
The Estimation of Wage Gains and Welfare Gains in Self-Selection Models
In this paper we consider the basic self-selection model for the effects of education, training, unions, and other activities on wages. We show that past models have ignored 'heterogeneity of rewards' to the activity--i.e., differences across individuals in the rate of return to the activity--as a source of selection bias. We model such heterogeneity, show how its presence can be tested, and draw out its implications for the wage and welfare gain…
