  • The dirty business of eliminating open defecation

Open Access•Lisa Cameron, Paul Gertler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 3

We examine the impacts of a sanitation program designed to eliminate open defecation in at-scale randomized field experiments in four countries: India, Indonesia, Mali, and Tanzania. The programs - all variants of the widely-used Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approach - increase village private sanitation coverage in all four locations by 7-39 percentage points. We use the experimentally-induced variation in access to sanitation to identi…

  • Monetary Incentives and Early Initiation of Antenatal Care

    Open Access•Chitalu Miriam Chama‐Chiliba, Peter Hangoma et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•2022•References: 49

Monetary incentives are often used to increase the motivation and output of health service providers. However, the focus has generally been on frontline health service providers. Using a cluster randomized trial, we evaluate the effect of monetary incentives provided to community‐based volunteers on early initiation of antenatal care (ANC) visits and deliveries in health facilities in communities in Zambia. Monetary incentives were assigned to co…

  • Conditional cash transfers, female bargaining power and parental labour supply

Open Access•Rafael Novella, Laura Ripani et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of International…•2021

Recent empirical evidence shows that conditional cash transfer (CCT) programmes do not have an aggregate effect on the adult labour supply. However, little attention has been paid to the role of other intrahousehold dynamics. This paper examines how the parental labour supply response to CCT programmes varies with the bargaining power structure of households. We analyse a randomized experimental CCT design from rural areas of Honduras (PRAF) and …

  • A Community-Based Program Promotes Sanitation

María Laura Alzúa, Habiba Djebbari et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2020•References: 25

Basic sanitation facilities are still lacking in large parts of the developing world, engendering serious environmental health risks. Interventions commonly deliver in-kind or cash subsidies to promote private toilet ownership. In this paper, we assess an intervention that provides information and behavioral incentives to encourage villagers in rural Mali to build and use basic latrines. Using an experimental research design and carefully measure…

  • The effect of education on teenage fertility

Open Access•María Laura Alzúa, Cecilia Velázquez•ARTICLE•IZA Journal of Development and…•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 21

This is the first study exploring the causal effect of education on teenage fertility in Argentina. We exploit an exogenous variation in education from the staggered implementation of the 1993 reform, which increased compulsory schooling from 7 to 10 years. We find a negative overall impact of education on teenage fertility rates, which operates through two complementing channels: a human capital effect (one additional year of schooling causes a …
