  • Divided yet United: Israeli-jewish Attitudes Toward the Oslo Process

    Open Access•Tamar Hermann, Ephraim Yuchtman-Yaar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Peace Research•2002•Cited by: 13•References: 15

This article examines Israeli-Jewish attitudes toward the Oslo process, as it has been unfolding in the years 1994-2001. We found that despite the turbulence and frequent crises associated with it, the aggregated attitudes toward the Oslo process have been remarkably stable during most of this period. We explain this stability by the persistent division of Israeli society into two entrenched publics - pro-Oslo and anti-Oslo - each of which displa…

  • Ethnicity, Education, and Other Determinants of Self-Employment in Israel

    Y Shavit, Ephraim Yuchtman-Yaar et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Sociology•2001•Cited by: 5•References: 15

This is a study of the determinants of self-employment in Israel. We employ data for about 13,000 Israeli men and women who were twenty-seven to thirty-four years old in 1995. For each respondent we merged records from the 1983 and 1995 censuses as well as their parents' records in the 1983 census. We distinguish between three categories of self-employment: professional-managerial, qualified, and unqualified occupations. Our main fin dings are: (…

The various political players ascribe these issues a different importance, each in accordance with its world view and concrete purposes. Nevertheless, it is difficult and perhaps even impossible to obtain a central place in the Israeli political arena at the current time without presenting some position on bot…

  • The Latitude of Acceptance: Israeli Attitudes toward Political Protest before and after the Assassination of Yitzhak Rabin

    Open Access•Ephraim Yuchtman-Yaar, Ephraim Yuchtman‐yaar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•1998•Cited by: 15•References: 5

This article answers two related questions: did the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin bring about significant changes in the attitudes of Israeli Jews toward antigovernment protest, and were there systematic group differences in these attitudes before and after Rabin's assassination? The empirical findings of four public opinion surveys point to a significant decline in overall support for antigovernment protest immediately after the …

  • Israeli Morale During the Gulf War

    Ephraim Yuchtman-Yaar, Ephraim Yuchtman‐yaar et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Public…•1995

This paper reports findings of a study on the influence of the Gulf War on the morale level of Israeli men and women. Having at our disposal panel data from the pre-war period, we were able to measure the changes in morale over time at the individual level by means of a standardized questionnaire. On the basis of previous theory and research, we expected that individual morale would be affected by proximity to risk areas and by gender. The result…

The authors explore the increasing ungovernmability of the Jewish state, its obsolete electoral system and cynical coalition politics, its overburdened judiciary, its stagnant economy, and related issues. While highly critical, they present the most comprehensive effort to date to provide a scholarly foundation for political reform in Israel

    Open Access•N Lewin-Epstein, Ephraim Yuchtman-Yaar et al.•ARTICLE•Work and Occupations•1991•Cited by: 3•References: 23

This study explores the impact of self-employment on health and argues that favorable aspects of autonomy and self-direction notwithstanding, the self-employed are frequently burdened by uncertainty, market fluctuations, and the threat of loss of assets. These impose considerable stress on the self-employed and induce life-styles and behaviors detrimental to health. The analysis is based on survey and medical data for a sample of men residing in …

  • The People's Image of Conflict Resolution: Israelis and Palestinians

    Open Access•Michael Inbar, Ephraim Yuchtman-Yaar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•1989•Cited by: 8•References: 6

This article presents a comparison of political preferences for solutions to the Israeli-Arab conflict of three samples of respondents synchronously interviewed: Israeli Jews, Israeli Arabs, and West Bank Arabs. The results indicate no solution is simultaneously endorsed at the grass roots by a plurality of Israeli Jews on the one hand, and Israeli Arabs or West Bank Arabs on the other. Nonetheless, both Jews and Arabs distinguish between ideal (…

  • Educational Opportunities and Occupational Aspirations: A Two-Dimensional Approach

Hanna Ayalon, Ephraim Yuchtman-Yaar et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Education•1989•Cited by: 3

This article proposes that the study of early career formation has failed to notice that inequalities in educational opportunities may generate alternative patterns of occupational aspirations. In particular, standard scales of aspirations cannot identify the economically ambitious who aim at occupations that generate high income but require low education. This type of ambition is likely when schooling cannot function as an effective means of mob…

  • Economic Culture in Post-Industrial Society: Orientation Toward Growth, Work and Technology

    Open Access•Ephraim Yuchtman-Yaar, Ephraim Yuchtman‐yaar•ARTICLE•International Sociology•1987•References: 4

This paper reports the results of a cross-national research study examining the argument that the values and attitudes generated by post-industrial society tend to be incongruent with the imperatives of industrialism. The empirical findings suggest that the 'economic culture' of the Western public, as indicated by attitudes toward economic growth and technological change, as well as by work-values and commitment, is generally supportive of the lo…

  • Social Distance in the Israeli-Arab Conflict: A Resource-Dependency Analysis

    Open Access•Ephraim Yuchtman-Yaar, Ephraim Yuchtman‐yaar et al.•ARTICLE•Comparative Political Studies•1986•Cited by: 7•References: 25

This article deals with the phenomenon of social distance as a social-psychological dimension of intergroup relationships. We discuss the concept of social distance and the research associated with it, pointing to some shortcomings in the theoretical thinking associated with this concept. We adopt an analytic framework that views the varieties of social distance as collective phenomena, reflecting the structure of resource interdependence between…

  • Technological Development and the Meaning of Work: A Cross-Cultural Perspective

    Open Access•Ephraim Yuchtman-Yaar, Ephraim Yuchtman‐yaar et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1985•Cited by: 2•References: 32

This paper reports the perceptions of the extent of technological change and its subjective impact among workers in five industrialized nations. We find that perceived technological change varies significantly among the surveyed publics, probably due to both the actual pace of technological change and sociocultural differences. Perceived change also varied between males and females and between blue and white-collar workers-both these variations b…

    Open Access•Michael Inbar, Ephraim Yuchtman-Yaar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•1985•Cited by: 4•References: 3

The focus of this article is the perceived importance for Egyptians and Israelis, and subgroups within these populations, of factors influencing the outcome of the Middle East conflict. The cognitive orientations underlying these perceptions are also examined for their relevance to various attitudes related to the conflict and its potential resolution. The article is based on personal interviews of samples drawn from cross-sections of the two nat…

This article is concerned with public views in Israel on a series of socioeconomic and labor market issues. The empirical findings were analyzed with the aim of exploring the nature of ideological orientations and value hierarchies underlying these public views. The main findings are that there is a major concern with economic recovery, at the expense of sensitivity to humanitarian, civil, and social problems; that there appears to be a pronounce…

  • Ethnic Inequality in Israeli Schools and Sports: An Expectation-States Approach

    Ephraim Yuchtman-Yaar, Ephraim Yuchtman‐yaar et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1979•Cited by: 11

Ethnic inequality in educational achievement between students of European-American ("Ashkenazi") and Asian-African ("Oriental") origin in Israel has been generally attributed to the lower SES and cultural disadvantage of Oriental Jews. More recent research indicates that Israeli teachers tend to generalize the characteristics of ethnic origin so that Orientals are considered less capable intellectually and motivationally to such an extent that th…
