Envisioning Hijra: The ethics of leaving and dwelling of European Muslims
Broadening the Urban Planning Repertoire with an ‘Arrival Infrastructures’ Perspective
In this article we propose an arrival infrastructure’s perspective in order to move beyond imaginaries of neighbourhoods as a ‘port of first entry’ that are deeply ingrained in urban planning discussions on migrants’ arrival situations. A focus on the socio-material infrastructures that shape an arrival situation highlights how such situations are located within, but equally transcend, the territories of neighbourhoods and other localities. Unpac…

Leaving Europe: New Crises, Entrenched Inequalities and Alternative Routes of Social Mobility
This article addresses conceptual issues around contemporary forms of out-of-Europe migrations of various European publics. In particular, we ask how such moves contribute to both the decentring of Europe in migration debates, and to the ‘de-migranticization' (Dahinden, 2016 Dahinden, J. (2016). A plea for the ‘de-migranticization’ of research on migration and integration 1. Ethnic and Racial Studies, 39(13), 2207–2225. https://doi.org/10.1080/01…

Mediating Matonge: Relocations of Belgian Postcoloniality in Four Films
In this paper I look at the Matonge neighbourhood of Brussels as a locus of postcolonial and diasporic imagination and activism by different groups and individuals most notably people who identify as Africans, Belgians with African roots, or ‘Black’ in Belgium. Within a longer historical narrative that starts in the late 19 th century, I focus on the period beginning in the late 1980s when new migrational flows from Africa and other southern coun…
Language and Superdiversity
This paper explores the scope for research on language and super-diversity.12 Following a protracted process of paradigm shift, sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology are well placed to engage with the contemporary social changes associated with super-diversity. After a brief introductory discussion of what super-diversity entails, the paper outlines key theoretical and methodological developments in language study: named languages have now…
Staging/caging 'otherness' in the postcolony: Spectres of the Human Zoo
When artists engage in postcolonial critiques, reworkings or parodies of what is often called 'human zoos', their performances claim access to the real, the culturally authentic, and the psychically primal-three expectations which Hal Foster (1995) qualifies as quasi-anthropological or pseudo-ethnographic. This article is an attempt to substantiate, expand and refine Foster's argument, in three subsequent steps. First, the article explores how Fo…

Negotiating apartheid and its legacy. Three decades as a citizen anthropologist of the Richtersveld
This dissertation is a portfolio thesis consisting of eleven published articles and a report submitted as evidence in a land claim court case. All of this work has been about, drawn on, or been stimulated by nearly three decades' work in the Richtersveld, a 'Coloured Rural Area' (or 'Reserve') in the remote and arid Namaqualand region of the Northern Cape Province of South Africa
Chthonic science: Georges Niangoran-Bouah and the anthropology of belonging in Côte d'Ivoire
Georges Niangoran-Bouah worked assiduously toward Africanizing national education, academia, and public culture in Côte d'Ivoire. As part of this venture, his research projects, including his study of "drummology," can be regarded as a quest for "chthonic" science, that is, an anthropology that uncovers and implements the deep tenets of African-Ivorian culture. Properly situated in its academic, ideological, and political umwelt, we demonstrate, …

Marching the nation: An essay on the mobility of belonging among militant youngsters in Cote d’Ivoire
This programmatic paper seeks to develop a new perspective on the military-political identity and performance of militias particularly in urban environments. The militia under consideration is the Groupement Patriotique pour la Paix (GPP), one of the oldest and most prominent of the southern militias. The G PP came into being as a civil society initiative in the aftermath of the September 2002 insurgency in Cote d'Ivoire a country which since the…

– Recalling the Belgian Congo: Conversations and Introspection. New York-Oxford, Berghahn Books, 2000, 235 p., index, bibl. (« New Directions in Anthropologie » 9)
When reading Recalling the Belgian Congo it is good to bear in mind what Sherry Ortner wrote in 1995: “The anthropologist and the historian are charged with representing the lives of people who are living or once lived, and as we attempt to push these people into the molds of our texts, they push back.” Ortner’s text provides a possible keying for Dembour’s first book as an ethnography of resistance–and its double: co-authorship. The dialectic pr…
