  • Artificial Intelligence as an Academic Ally: A Quality Improvement Initiative for a Graduate Evaluation Course

Open Access•Shannon Sampson, Hannah Keene et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Evaluation•2026•References: 1

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has influenced evaluation and evaluation education. As AI tools become more common, educators must explore how they can enhance student learning, engagement, and accessibility, and prepare students well for professional work. While some faculty may hesitate to integrate AI, a constructive approach is to equip students to use AI ethically and effectively. This article describes how an instructo…

  • A bootstrapping approach to social media quantification

    Open Access•Ashlynn R Daughton, Michael J Paul•ARTICLE•Social Network Analysis and Mining•2021

This work considers the use of classifiers in a downstream aggregation task estimating class proportions, such as estimating the percentage of reviews for a movie with positive sentiment. We derive the bias and variance of the class proportion estimator when taking classification error into account to determine how to best trade off different error types when tuning a classifier for these tasks. Additionally, we propose a method for constructing …

  • An Empirical Study on Crosslingual Transfer in Probabilistic Topic Models

    Open Access•Shudong Hao, Michael J Paul•ARTICLE•Computational Linguistics•2020•References: 2

Probabilistic topic modeling is a common first step in crosslingual tasks to enable knowledge transfer and extract multilingual features. Although many multilingual topic models have been developed, their assumptions about the training corpus are quite varied, and it is not clear how well the different models can be utilized under various training conditions. In this article, the knowledge transfer mechanisms behind different multilingual topic m…

  • Streams in the Urban Landscape

Michael J Paul, Judy L Meyer•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Ecology and…•2001

The world's population is concentrated in urban areas. This change in demography has brought landscape transformations that have a number of documented effects on stream ecosystems. The most consistent and pervasive effect is an increase in impervious surface cover within urban catchments, which alters the hydrology and geomorphology of streams. This results in predictable changes in stream habitat. In addition to imperviousness, runoff from urba…
