A narrative review of heterogeneity in Sars-CoV-2 infection outcomes and vaccine efficacy
Disease epidemiology during the COVID-19 pandemic differed greatly across the globe. In contrast to early pandemic predictions, Africa recorded the fewest SARS-CoV-2 related hospitalizations and deaths. Hypotheses proposed to explain this paradox include underreporting, age demographics, climate, national mitigation strategies, lifestyle factors, pre-existing cross-reactive protection, and host genetic determinants. This traditional, narrative re…
Hygiene behaviours are critical for addressing neglected tropical diseases
What does equitable global health research and delivery look like? Tackling Infections to Benefit Africa (Tiba) partnership as a case study
There is a current global push to identify and implement best practice for delivering maximum impact from development research in low-income and middle-income countries. Here, we describe a model of research and capacity building that challenges traditional approaches taken by western funders in Africa. Tackling Infections to Benefit Africa (TIBA) is a global health research and delivery partnership with a focus on strengthening health systems to…
What are Sars-CoV-2 genomes from the WHO Africa region member states telling us
box Pathogen genome sequencing can inform control measures including diagnosis, identifying infection sources and patterns of infection and disease prognosis. The first case of SARS-CoV-2 was reported on 31 December 2019, and on 10 January 2020 the first sequences of the virus were made publicly available allowing the development and standardisation of the real-time PCR diagnostics for the virus. The reagents for the PCR diagnostic test were desi…
Oxygen provision to fight Covid-19 in sub-Saharan Africa
The adequate provision of medical oxygen is going to make the difference between life and death for the majority of patients with COVID-19 in Africa. Sub-Saharan African countries lack affordable and reliable oxygen supply. There is evidence from sub-Saharan Africa for why medical oxygen provision must be made a regional urgent priority. Efforts being made in some African countries demonstrate how oxygen provision can be scaled up through innovat…
Association of Schistosoma haematobium infection morbidity and severity on co-infections in pre-school age children living in a rural endemic area in Zimbabwe
This study revealed an association between schistosomiasis and the comorbidity conditions of URTI, dermatophytosis, malaria and FUO in PSAC living in a schistosomiasis endemic area. A possible detrimental effect where coinfection led to severe sequels of the comorbidity conditions was demonstrated. Appropriate clinical diagnostic methods are required to identify associated infectious diseases and initiate early treatment of schistosomiasis and co…
Strengthening national health research systems in the WHO African Region – progress towards universal health coverage
BACKGROUND: Health challenges and health systems set-ups differ, warranting contextualised healthcare interventions to move towards universal health coverage. As such, there is emphasis on generation of contextualized evidence to solve local challenges. However, weak research capacity and inadequate resources remain an impendiment to quality research in the African region. WHO African Region (WHO AFR) facilitated the adoption of a regional strate…
Efficacy of integrated school based de-worming and prompt malaria treatment on helminths -Plasmodium falciparum co-infections
BACKGROUND: The geographical congruency in distribution of helminths and Plasmodium falciparum makes polyparasitism a common phenomenon in Sub Saharan Africa. The devastating effects of helminths-Plasmodium co-infections on primary school health have raised global interest for integrated control. However little is known on the feasibility, timing and efficacy of integrated helminths-Plasmodium control strategies. A study was conducted in Zimbabwe…
