  • Minority nationalism and welfare state attitudes

Leslie S Laczko, Leslie Laczko•ARTICLE•British Journal of Canadian Studies•2005•References: 4

Modern welfare states are not all cut from the same cloth, and much research has been devoted to describing and analysing their similarities and differences. Esping-Andersen (1990) identifies three types of welfare state regimes, the liberal 'anglo-saxon' model, the conservative/corporatist model, and the social democratic model. In the liberal welfare state, exemplified by the United States, Australia and Canada, and to a lesser extent the Unite…

  • National and Local Attachments in a Changing World System

    Leslie S Laczko•ARTICLE•International Review of Sociology•2005•Cited by: 17•References: 9

Attachment to community is a central component of identities in the modern world, and community attachment can be expressed at different levels within national states. Most classical perspectives on modern societies have taken for granted that national states have long been the most important locus of citizen attachment and loyalty in the contemporary world system. More recently, many influential perspectives on globalization have suggested that …

    Leslie S Laczko•ARTICLE•Recherches sociographiques•2005•Cited by: 5•References: 1

  • Attitudes Towards Aboriginal Issues in Canada

    Leslie S Laczko, Leslie Laczko•ARTICLE•Quebec Studies•1997

  • Feelings of Fraternity in Canada

    Open Access•Leslie S Laczko•ARTICLE•Asian and Pacific migration journal•1997•References: 12

How are feelings of fraternity distributed within nation-states? This paper deals with the status dimension of ethnic stratification in Canada, and specifically with the way comfort levels with a whole range of ethno-national group labels vary between Canadian regions. Previous research found that the Canadian population gives the highest status evaluations to those of British origin, with evaluations following a downward gradient through various…

  • Feelings of fraternity towards old and new Canadians

    Leslie S Laczko•ARTICLE•Nationalism and Ethnic Politics•1995•Cited by: 1•References: 4

How are feelings of fraternity distributed within nation‐states? Most theories of citizenship take for granted that citizens of modern societies will extend higher levels of fraternity towards fellow citizens than towards 'foreigners' who are citizens of other states. At the same time, past research on the status dimension of ethnic stratification in Canada shows that status evaluations are highest for the British and European groups, and lowest …

  • Canada's pluralism in comparative perspective

    Leslie S Laczko•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•1994•Cited by: 10•References: 10

In the contemporary world system of independent states, why do some states have more internal diversity or pluralism than others? This article attempts to locate Canada's level of pluralism in comparative context by sequentially combining the two comparative strategies identified by Ragin (1987). First, following a variable-oriented strategy, a regression analysis of cross-national data reveals that the Canadian case is definitely an outlier in t…

This article presents an empirical test of three hypotheses dealing with the modernisation of polyethnic societies. An hypothesis derived from the functionalist/developmental perspective and two hypotheses derived from the conflict/competition perspective are assessed using survey data on Francophone‐Anglophone relations in contemporary Quebec. The main conclusions are that 1) the cross‐sectional design using survey data allows a clear test of He…
