Global warming and the tipping point
Global warming is a contentious issue. Depending on one's point of view, causes and outcomes can be quite different. It is certain, however, that the earth is constantly changing, evolving into different sets of environmental conditions. The changes, interpreted as good or bad, are conditioned by perspective and personal impact. Geologists tend to take a long‐term view of environmental change, e.g. glacial–interglacial cycles and fluctuation of s…

The prehistory of Sri Lanka: An ecological perspective
Emergence of the Varanger Peninsula, Arctic Norway, and climate changes since deglaciation
Fields of glacioisostatically uplifted beach ridges on the eastern Varanger Peninsula coast in northern Norway record the occurrence of major storms since deglaciation. More than 70 radiocarbon dates of palaeoshoreline indicators establish the Late Weichselian and Holocene history of beach-ridge building and relative sea-level change. Optimal ridge-building in the region requires sustained, strong easterlies driving high waves across the Barents …
Quasi-equilibrium in Holocene climatic change
The encyclopedia of paleontology. edited by Rhodes Whitmore Fairbridge and David Jablonski
Scholarly work with lengthy entries followed by references for further reading. Many illustrations. Indexed
Sedimentology
Effects of Holocene Climatic Change on some Tropical Geomorphic Processes
Man's interference with the landscape process places him in the role of a “paraglacial” agent: He tends to duplicate ice-age stresses such as deforestation, accelerated erosion, and climate alteration. Against a background climatic control dictated by the Milankovich mechanisms, the 10,000-year history of the Holocene has seen very large secondary modulations that must be better understood so that they may be distinguished from anthropogenic effe…
Climatology of a Glacial Cycle
A “glacial cycle” is defined as a major global climatic oscillation of the order of 10 5 yr, developed within an “ice age” sensu lato which may last 10 6 –10 7 yr and which recurs at widely spaced intervals in geologic time (ca. 2 × 10 8 yr). The ice age situation thus only persists during 5–10% of all geologic time and is preconditioned by geotectonics and not by extraterrestrial controls. The repetitive nature of the glacial cycle is demonstrat…
Desert and Rain in Nubia: Geomorphology and Prehistoric Environments at the Aswan Reservoir. Karl W. Butzer and Carl L. Hansen
Solar Variations, Climatic Change, and Related Geophysical Problems
Landslide Patterns on Oceanic Volcanoes and Atolls
Experience during the Pacific war focused the attention of many geologists on the morphology of coral re fs. It appears that concave bights in the normally convex outlines of both oceanic volcanoes and isolated coral atolls may be engendered by big submarine landslides and this note on the external shape of oceanic coral islands, especially atolls, has been prompted by the photo-interpretation of certain oceanic volcanoes
The Low Isles of the Great Barrier Reef: A New Analysis
Some Coral Reefs of the Sahul Shelf
A Contemporary Eustatic Rise in Sea-Level
