Spatial Management of Hominid Groups at Olduvai: A Preliminary Exercise
Raw material exploitation for the manufacture of lithic artifacts by settlements of Beds I and II at Olduvai Gorge is initially explored applying some approaches from cultural geography. Overall and selective preferences by hominid groups with relation to quality of raw material and distance from resources are discussed and priorities in decision-making concerning the location of settlements are suggested. Owing to the time-span involved (2 to 1 …

The Acheulean Handaxe: A Maintainable Multifunctional Tool
The Acheulean Handaxe has been somewhat enigmatic in prehistoric research. This paper reviews previous ideas and makes the case that the Acheulean Handaxe was a maintainable, multifunctional tool

Mobility and Aggregation of the Acheuleans on The Yiron Plateau: A Suggested Model

Milking the Stones or An Acheulean Aggregation Locality on the Yiron Plateau in Upper Galilee
The central and most intricate occurrence among the acheulean sites of the Yiron Plateau and environs, Israel, is studied. All lines of evidence favour an interpretation of Mitzpeh Yiron (Y25) as an aggregation node where small groups assembled to concentrate on the exploitation of a relatively short-term seasonal subsistence resource. Concurrently the congregation event enhanced co-operative activities, sociocultural relationships, and particula…

Specialization and the Middle/Upper Paleolithic Transition [and Comments and Reply]
Discussions of the differences between the Middle and the Upper Paleolithic usually oppose them as if they differed in essence and resort to lists of features apparently disconnected among themselves. This approach may be questioned; in fact, we are dealing with successive stages of a continuous evolutionary process, and we ought to be seeking, on a broader geographical and chrono-cultural basis, a unifying principle of which the features conside…

Artificial Stone Arrangements in the Acheulean Site of Mitzpeh Yiron, Israel
At this newly discovered site on the Yiron Plateau, Galilee Heights, nine basaltic stone formations susceptible of reflecting constructional activities by Acheulean people were discerned. The configuration of the formations and data on the associated artefacts along with basic details of the stones incorporated are provided. Mitzpeh Yiron thus joins the list of very few Lower Palaeolithic open-air sites where evidence of some sort of ‘building’ p…

Rethinking the Middle/Upper Paleolithic Transition [and Comments and Replies]
This paper critically examines previous statements concerning the nature of the Middle/Upper Paleolithic transition in Western Europe. Mellars's overview of the transition in southwestern France forms the point of departure for discussion. Several of Mellars's contentions are modified in light of methodological weaknesses and recently available data. It is suggested that many observed Middle/Upper Paleolithic differences are best understood with …
Factors of Habitat Selection of Acheulean Sites at Ramat Yiron, Israel

Stone Tools, Toolkits, and Human Behavior in Prehistory [and Comments and Reply]
Stone artefacts are usually privileged witnesses, and often the sole preserved witnesses, of prehistoric man and his activities. The study of artefacts is ordinarily restricted to typology, i.e., description, classification, and comparison of these artefacts clustered into assemblages with a view to defining industries and, hence, prehistoric cultures. This approach is somewhat limited, as it registers differences or resemblances between the asse…
The Clactonian: An Independent Complex or an Integral Part of the Acheulean? [and Comments and Reply]
The Clactonian tradition of the British Lower Palaeolithic is currently accepted as an autonomous prehistoric culture, distinct from the Acheulean and pre-dating it. The recent excavations of a number of central sites have opened up a new opportunity for a comprehensive reinvestigation of Clactonian versus Acheulean artifacts along with other aspects related to the two complexes. This study examines and analyzes an unprecedented quantity of objec…
Technological Efficiency in Prehistoric Alt Assemblages from Northwestern France and Southeastern England
An analysis of flake attributes from five French and five English ALT(Acheulean with Levallois technique) assemblages shows that the French ALT was more standardized, and therefore more efficient than was the English ALT. This is the first of a number of analyses which are designed to explain the differential level of technology between the French and English ALT
Clactonian Flaking” and Primary Flaking: Some Initial Observations
This paper reappraises the long-accepted terms and concepts of Clactonian flaking and Clactonian flakes. It attempts to show that Clactonian flakes are nothing more than the regular products of the primary stage in the flaking process of every technology. Therefore, “Clactonian flakes” cannot serve as criteria for distinguishing any distinct industrial tradition

Patterned Concentrations on Living Floors at Olduvai, Beds I and II: Experimental Study
Eighteen bone/artifact concentrations of two different shapes (11 circular and seven elongated) have been discerned on 14 of the living floors in Oldowan and Lower Acheulean sites at Olduvai in Kenya. Counts and tests have shown that the patterning is reinforced by the relations among four variables comprising the contents of these concentrations: small bone fragments, debitage, larger bones, other tools. It is tentatively suggested that the elon…
