SYNOPSIS The almost universal stem for 3 in Bantu is ‐tatu, or a variant, in particular ‐datu. In the northeast the dominant form for 6 is ‐tandatu. It has been asserted that ‐tandatu is a duplication of ‐datu. This etymology is rejected. Instead the etymology ‐tandatu=5+3 is suggested. Evidence is presented to show that ‐tandatu was originally in position 8 but then fell into position 6
