Structured interviews were conducted with 172 male alcoholics in southern California: 23% were under 40 years, 31%, 50 or over; 56% were Protestant; 55% had up to 11 years of schooling, 30%, 12 years, 15%, some college; 13% were unemployed; 26% were of Irish descent, 15% Mexican, 10% Negro, 4% Amerind. Over half were in a county prison farm setting; the remainder from a Skid Row center, a half-way house and an alcoholism clinic. Primary concern w…
Electroencephalographic Changes and Vigilance Behavior During Experimentally Induced Intoxication with Alcoholic Subjects
Spectral analyses of EEG data derived from 12 healthy male alcoholics are reported. Data were acquired at five blood alcohol levels ranging from .026% to .104%. Marked increases in 8- and 9-cycle activity were accompanied by substantial reduction of 10- and 11-cycle energy with no change in the 12- and 13- cycle activity. Psychological, physiological, and biochemical studies were conducted on 4 healthy young-adult males while they underwent 120 hr. of sleep deprivation. The subjects quickly Formed a group and dealt with this contrived stress in much the same way that groups cope with stressful environments.
