  • Are Mediterranean Societies “Cultures of Honor?”: Prevalence and Implications of a Cultural Logic of Honor Across Three World Regions

    Open Access•Vivian L Vignoles, Alexander Kirchner-Häusler et al.•ARTICLE•Personality and Social Psychology…•2026

Mediterranean societies are often labeled as “honor cultures,” in contrast with presumed “dignity” and “face” cultures of Anglo-Western and East Asian societies. We measured these cultural logics in two large-scale surveys (Studies 1 & 3: N = 2,942 students from 11 societies; Study 2: N = 5,471 adults from 14 societies). Middle Eastern and North African groups perceived honor values as the most normative in their societies, followed by Southeast …

Open Access•Zafer Özkan, Malgorzata Kossowska et al.•ARTICLE•Personality and Social Psychology…•2025

This study examines the longitudinal interplay between individuals’ perceptions of two types of intergroup threats—realistic and symbolic—and their feelings of closeness toward Ukrainian war refugees, using a three-wave design and a random intercept cross-lagged panel model. By disentangling within-person dynamics from between-person effects, the findings reveal that stronger-than-usual feelings of closeness predicted reduced perceptions of both …

  • Understanding protest intentions: The influence of belief systems post-earthquake tragedies

    Open Access•Zafer Özkan•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2024

This study explores how belief systems—free will, fatalistic determinism, and scientific determinism—are associated with individuals' intentions to engage in protest, focusing on the context of the 2023 earthquakes in Southeastern Türkiye. These earthquakes, with magnitudes of 7.8 and 7.5, caused severe damage and loss of life, exacerbated by issues of corruption and neglect. Drawing on collective action research, the study examines how anger and…

  • Proximal and distal honor fit and subjective well‐being in the Mediterranean region

    Open Access•Alexander Kirchner-Häusler, Felix Schönbrodt et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2024

OBJECTIVE: People's psychological tendencies are attuned to their sociocultural context and culture-specific ways of being, feeling, and thinking are believed to assist individuals in successfully navigating their environment. Supporting this idea, a stronger "fit" with one's cultural environment has often been linked to positive psychological outcomes. The current research expands the cultural, conceptual, and methodological space of cultural fi…

  • Intergroup contact and intended actions in support of disadvantaged groups: The role of affective processes and feelings of solidarity

    Open Access•Zafer Özkan, Kristof Dhont et al.•ARTICLE•Group Processes & Intergroup…•2023•References: 17

Intergroup contact is a well-established basis of prejudice reduction. However, less is known about its potential to motivate people to act in support of disadvantaged groups. We investigated the associations of both positive and negative intergroup contact with action intentions for disadvantaged groups among members of ethnic majority groups from different intergroup contexts, including non-WEIRD samples. Furthermore, we tested the role of affe…

Ayse K Uskul, Alexander Kirchner-Häusler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2023•Cited by: 9

Social science research has highlighted "honor" as a central value driving social behavior in Mediterranean societies, which requires individuals to develop and protect a sense of their personal self-worth and their social reputation, through assertiveness, competitiveness, and retaliation in the face of threats. We predicted that members of Mediterranean societies may exhibit a distinctive combination of independent and interdependent social ori…
