Management and incipient domestication of Chamaedorea tepejilote in agroforestry systems in Mexico
Societal Impact Statement Native wild plants are key elements in addressing global biodiversity loss and supporting sustainable food systems. We investigated how rural communities in Mexico manage Chamaedorea tepejilote , a wild palm with edible male inflorescences, by combining ethnobotanical, genetic, morphological, and ecological approaches. We found that communities sustainably utilize the species by safeguarding the knowledge and practices t…
Pulque and pulquerías of Mexico City
Pulque is a fermented beverage prepared with the sap of agave species, consumed since pre-Hispanic times in Mexico. In the sixteenth century, spaces called pulquerías were established for the sale and consumption of pulque. The demand for pulque became so high that there were more than 1500 pulquerías in Mexico City early twentieth century, but due to socio-cultural factors, the popularity of pulque plummeted. Currently, there are few pulquerías …
Management, morphological and genetic diversity of domesticated agaves in Michoacán, México
BackgroundPulque is a fermented beverage prepared with sap ofAgavespecies in Mexico. Management of agaves for this purpose has motivated domestication of some species and high phenotypic variation that commonly causes uncertainty about the taxonomic identity of varieties traditionally managed by people. This study assumed that varieties of crop species continually arise from mutations, sexual reproduction and hybridization, among other processes,…
