Some Spatial Patterns of Environment and Landuse in West Africa
Lessons from the tropics for a global geomorphology
Historically, geomorphologists have applied uniformitarian principles based on a temperate normality to all water‐worn landscapes. Isolation of tropical landforms within formal morphogenetic regions, which arose during the early history of the subject, has persisted. However, in a global geomorphology, plate tectonic motion, Milankovich cycles of climate change and invasive weather systems all render fixed climatic boundaries meaningless and, on …
A chronostratigraphy of mid and late-Holocene slope evolution: Creagan a' Chaorainn, Northern Highlands, Scotland
Unusual exposure of the drift stratigraphy of a typical, vegetated hillslope in the Northern Highlands of Scotland has allowed reconstruction of its Holocene history. Graphic logging of palaeogully fill, sediment analysis, radiocarbon dating and microscopic investigation of horizon boundaries, link periodic slope instability to changes in hydrology and vegetation cover. The oldest preserved organic matter dates from about 7.5 cal. ka BP. Several …

Tropical Geomorphology: A Study of Weathering and Landform Development in Warm Climates
Some Geomorphological Implications of Deep Weathering Patterns in Crystalline Rocks in Nigeria
THE PHENOMENON of deep weathering has received frequent discussion in papers concerned with the geomorphology of terrains developed on crystalline rocks, yet few of these studies show actual depths of weathering except for occasional, isolated locations. This absence of quantitative information obviously weakens arguments based upon the premise that deep weathering occurs widely within a given area or displays particular relationships with surfac…
