Cave archaeology in Greece
Caves have long been valued in archaeology for their exceptional preservation of stratified deposits and other finds (e.g. palaeontological), making them vital sites for chronological sequencing and interpretive analysis. While some cave sites exemplify the value of stratigraphic integrity, many cave contexts present methodological and epistemological challenges due to palimpsest layers, complex usage histories, and symbolic dimensions. This pape…
Petrology and Provenance Study of Stone Artifacts from the Mesolithic Cave of Kouvaras in Attica
This paper focuses on the lithology and raw material provenance of stone artifacts discovered in the prehistoric cave of Kouvaras in Eastern Attica, dating back to the 10th-9th millennia B.C. The study aims to determine whether these prehistoric artifacts were made on local or non-local raw materials. The research consists of two main components: a field study to detect the geological features of the region and collect raw material samples, and a…
Gourimadi Archaeological Project
The Norwegian Institute at Athens received a permit from the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports in 2018 to conduct a five-year excavation project at the site of Gourimadi in southern Euboea. The first field season, conducted in June 2018, lasted for four weeks during which two trenches were opened at the site and partially excavated by a Norwegian-Greek team of researchers and students. The aim of the project is to understand the transition fro…
Lipid Analysis of Pottery from the Early Bronze Age II Burials at Ayia Triada Cave, Southern Euboea, Greece
Ayia Triada Cave excavations revealed multiple human burials and evidence for feasting in Early Bronze Age (EBA) Greece. Associated pottery was subjected to gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) to investigate feasting in ritual contexts. Reported here are the first organic residue results from 69 sherds. Abundant residues were preserved, revealing heavy vessel use and multi‐resource mixtures, and echoing domestic consumption patterns. Thi…
Searching for the Pleistocene/Holocene Transition
Recording Santorini’s subterranean landscapes
This paper investigates cave use strategies in insular environments, focusing on a case study from Santorini (Thera) island in Greece. The paper has a two-fold aim to propose and test a methodological framework for noninvasive archaeological evaluation of cave sites and to explore the ways that people, not only on Santorini, but also on similar small islands, have engaged with caves through time. Santorini is famous today as a holiday destination…
First Speleothem Evidence of the Hiera Eruption (197 BC), Santorini, Greece
Speleothems are useful in detecting past geoenvironmental events. Variations in trace element concentrations may constitute a diagnostic of volcanic eruptions, enabling both dating and environmental impact assessment. This work attempts to detect possible ‘signatures’ of past volcanic eruptions in speleothems from Zoodochos Pigi cave on Santorini. Higher-than-usual concentrations of elements and minerals (e.g. barium and monazite respectively) ex…
Cave sanctuaries in the Bronze Age Cyclades? New evidence from the island of Paros, Greece
Recent research at two cave sites on the island of Paros have yielded some of the first evidence for the ritual use of caves in the Cyclades during the second millennium BC
Communities in Transition
Early Bronze Age Burial Deposits at the Ayia Triada Cave at Karystos, Euboia
We present here the preliminary results of four seasons of excavation (2007–2010) within the Ayia Triada Cave, located in the vicinity of Karystos in southern Euboia. We take the Early Bronze Age layers as our focus because of the human remains dating to that time period that were found in a section of the cave called the East Chamber. Following the discussion of our research aims, the geographical setting, our methods, and a critical assessment …
