Collage-Cyborg-CollectiveBiography: Creating Affective Spaces to Inhabit the (South American) Neoliberal Academy
Collage-Cyborg-CollectiveBiography is an affective, situated proposition for researching academic subjectivities within the neoliberal university. Drawing on feminist affect theory, the study understands research as a living political practice emerging from everyday embodied academic encounters. Rather than applying predefined methods, this proposition unfolds through an articulation of diverse collective, theoretical-methodological, and experime…
Navigating the maze: Experiences of conducting a decolonial feminist affective ethnography of an interdisciplinary building
This paper examines the complex interplay between interdisciplinary research (IDR) and the materiality of an academic building designed to support it. Framed as a five-act play, this study portrays the embodied experiences of four migrant-women-researchers while conducting an affective ethnography in an ID building. Focusing on the affective intensities and resonances that emerge within the relationships between humans and nonhuman bodies, this r…
Nobody is born knowing how to be a parent: Navigating Tensions in the Experiences of Teenage Mothers Within the Child Protection System
A new approach to exploring agency in migration research: The case of south-to-south migration among Venezuelan youth
Surviving Violence, Ambiguity and Oneself: The Experience of Child Protection Workers in Chile
The challenges of contemporary child welfare practice are well documented in many countries worldwide. The current study enhances this work by reporting the lived experiences of child welfare workers in Chile, who negotiate their practice in a strained political and organisational context. A qualitative methodology was used to understand the complexities of the survival strategies of these workers. Data were collected via multiple individual inte…
Rethinking clinical empathy: The relevance of empathy affect in child welfare work in Chile
This article proposes re-evaluating traditional views of empathy in child welfare work, advocating for recognizing the role of affect in empathic relationships. Traditionally, clinical empathy has been described as a unidirectional relationship where clinical workers must remain neutral, setting aside their perceptual frameworks to become ‘mirrors’ of their clients. Through a grounded theory analysis of data collected in Chile, this article revea…
We gave ourselves permission to affect and to be affected. We listened to the voices of Chilean child welfare workers and embodied their experiences. We heard their doubts, contradictions, ideas, and yearnings. After a series of interviews, we created three poems with those voices. It felt wrong and incomplete. Vertical(ly)-Dry. We focused on the textual, but the workers’ voices demanded an Ontological change, an analysis from Affect theory that …
Covid-19 and child welfare policy in Chile: The experience of front-line workers
COVID-19 arrived in Chile amid social protests that questioned the State's ability to protect children's rights. Nevertheless, child policy workers continued working despite the drastic changes to their daily work generated by both the pandemic and conflicts within the child welfare system. In this article, we aim to understand how these workers have experienced and overcome these challenges. We show that they have continued doing interventions w…
(analytical)Chile is an emblematic case in the implementation of a neoliberal child welfare policy. This policy is now almost entirely undertaken by private organizations, financed based on their achievement of standardized performance indicators. Scientific literature suggests that these indicators govern workers' rationality. However, international studies indicate that the effect of indicators is not just rational but also affective. From a te…
Exacerbados.
