  • Retribution Versus Rehabilitation

    Open Access•Karen T Y Tang, Karen Tang•ARTICLE•Canadian Graduate Journal of…•2023

Both Canada and the United States of America have a considerable imprisonment issue, leading to calls for prison reforms. When considering the role of punishment in the legal system, research indicates that individuals tend to want to achieve three objectives: retribution, general deterrence, or specific deterrence. The Nordic Prison Model, which focuses on rehabilitating the individual, may be a solution to the current North American retribution…

  • Fostering resilience and countering stigma

    Noelle J Strickland, Karen T Y Tang et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Trauma Theory…•2022

The social-ecological resilience framework posits that the development of negative psychological outcomes (NPO) following alcohol-involved sexual assault (AISA) is influenced by the interaction of sociocultural and individual risk and protective factors. AISA survivors may be particularly vulnerable to AISA stigma (e.g., victim-blaming rape myths), a sociocultural risk factor which, if internalized, may increase individual risk factors such as se…

    A Justine Dowd, Karen T Y Tang et al.•ARTICLE•Self and Identity•2022

Part 1 involved pilot testing two programs for people with celiac disease (self-regulation, SR; or SR plus self-compassion, SR+SC). Results from focus groups revealed participants wanted more and tailored content, and new content bi-weekly versus weekly. In Part 2, we assessed the feasibility of delivering the programs online and the effects of the programs on behavioural and psychological outcomes. All participants reported significant improveme…

  • Navigating Open Science as Early Career Feminist Researchers

    Open Access•Madeleine Pownall, Catherine V Talbot et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Women Quarterly•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 24

Open science aims to improve the rigor, robustness, and reproducibility of psychological research. Despite resistance from some academics, the open science movement has been championed by some early career researchers (ECRs), who have proposed innovative new tools and methods to promote and employ open research principles. Feminist ECRs have much to contribute to this emerging way of doing research. However, they face unique barriers, which may p…

  • Is It All About Retribution? The Flexibility of Punishment Goals

    Open Access•Mathias Twardawski, Karen T Y Tang et al.•ARTICLE•Social Justice Research•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 29

Current literature suggests that laypeople's punishment is primarily driven by retributive reasons (i.e., to give offender their just deserts) rather than utilitarian purposes such as special prevention (i.e., to prevent recidivism of the offender) or general prevention (i.e., to prevent the imitation of the crime by others). One explanation for this may be that individuals tend to focus on salient cues while ignoring others when making a decisio…
