  • Pyrotechnology in the Pleistocene

    Terrence Twomey•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Cognitive…•2023

This chapter considers the influence of controlled fire use on the evolution of human cognition during the Pleistocene using the principles of cognitive archaeology in conjunction with Material Engagement Theory (MET). It is proposed that this approach provides an effective way to better understand the causal and constitutive nature of domestic fire on human cognition. This proposal is supported through a discussion of the evidence for fire-keepi…

  • The Cognitive Implications of Controlled Fire Use by Early Humans

    Open Access•Terrence Twomey•ARTICLE•Cambridge Archaeological Journal•2013•Citada por: 7

This article proposes a framework for investigating the cognitive implications of controlled fire use by Middle Pleistocene humans. By identifying the simplest strategies they could have used to control fire, given the constraints individuals had to overcome, we can establish a behavioural basis for making inferences about cognition. Accessing, maintaining and benefiting from fire involved a range of behaviours that imply future-directed planning…
