A vision of coexistence-centred African culture
This article explores the meaning of coexistence-centred African culture, a world in which racial colonial violence does not interrupt our sense of how we value other African people. Accountability for conquest and the return of everything and everybody that has been stolen through slavery, colonialism, imprisonment, forced labour, land theft, rape, torture, and cruelty begins with the recognition of our many African selves as one. The author fir…
Preface to Special Issue on Ethiopia
This preface provides a brief introduction to this special issue on contemporary Ethiopia. It highlights the role played by land, ethnicity, federalism, and political ideology in the constitutional development and politics of Ethiopia. The Ethiopian state with its ethnic federation of different ethno-linguistic regions is contextualized. The preface concludes by proposing the thesis that the current constitution of Ethiopia does not contribute to…
Revolutionary Democracy
This special issue of JDS provides several critical perspectives on the federal Constitution, the state, and contemporary politics of Ethiopia. All the contributors agree that Ethiopia’s federal system promotes ethnic conflict rather than fostering an Ethiopian identity and national unity. The federal Constitution establishes a legal foundation for secession and in effect the possible disintegration of the federal state and the country’s multi-et…

Timely Initiation of Complementary Feeding Practices in Gondar Town Northwest Ethiopia
This study revealed that timely initiation of complementary feeding was low within the study area. Around half of the children started complementary feeding at their 6 months of age. Therefore, special emphasis should be given to mothers who have poor knowledge about complementary feeding and encourage all mothers to have postnatal follow-up is crucial
Health effects of dietary risks in 195 countries, 1990–2017
BACKGROUND: Suboptimal diet is an important preventable risk factor for non-communicable diseases (NCDs); however, its impact on the burden of NCDs has not been systematically evaluated. This study aimed to evaluate the consumption of major foods and nutrients across 195 countries and to quantify the impact of their suboptimal intake on NCD mortality and morbidity. METHODS: By use of a comparative risk assessment approach, we estimated the propor…
Perception regarding the causes of schizophrenia and associated factors among Feresbet district residents
The traditional perception of the cause of schizophrenia is higher than the bio-psycho-social view. Female sex, no formal education, age ≥ 25 years, living in an extended families and unemployed had a significant association with the traditional perception of the causes of schizophrenia. Therefore, giving special attention to females, uneducated and unemployed individual is crucial. In addition, older age and individuals living in extended family…
Stunting and Its Determinants among Adolescent Girls

Therefore, this study aimed to assess the prevalence of stunting and its determinants among adolescent girls in Dabat district. A total of 1556 adolescent girls were included in the study. The WHO's Anthro-plus software was used to generate the height for age z-scores. Variables having a p -value p -value Abbreviations: AOR= Adjus…
Global, regional, and national age-sex-specific mortality and life expectancy, 1950–2017
BACKGROUND: Assessments of age-specific mortality and life expectancy have been done by the UN Population Division, Department of Economics and Social Affairs (UNPOP), the United States Census Bureau, WHO, and as part of previous iterations of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD). Previous iterations of the GBD used population estimates from UNPOP, which were not derived in a way that was internally consistent wit…
Global, regional, and national age-sex-specific mortality for 282 causes of death in 195 countries and territories, 1980–2017
BACKGROUND: Global development goals increasingly rely on country-specific estimates for benchmarking a nation's progress. To meet this need, the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2016 estimated global, regional, national, and, for selected locations, subnational cause-specific mortality beginning in the year 1980. Here we report an update to that study, making use of newly available data and improved methods. GBD …
Alcohol use and burden for 195 countries and territories, 1990–2016
BACKGROUND: Alcohol use is a leading risk factor for death and disability, but its overall association with health remains complex given the possible protective effects of moderate alcohol consumption on some conditions. With our comprehensive approach to health accounting within the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2016, we generated improved estimates of alcohol use and alcohol-attributable deaths and disability-adjus…
Global, regional, and national comparative risk assessment of 84 behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risks or clusters of risks for 195 countries and territories, 1990–2017
BackgroundThe Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017 comparative risk assessment (CRA) is a comprehensive approach to risk factor quantification that offers a useful tool for synthesising evidence on risks and risk–outcome associations. With each annual GBD study, we update the GBD CRA to incorporate improved methods, new risks and risk–outcome pairs, and new data on risk exposure levels and risk–outcome associatio…
Measuring performance on the Healthcare Access and Quality Index for 195 countries and territories and selected subnational locations
BACKGROUND: A key component of achieving universal health coverage is ensuring that all populations have access to quality health care. Examining where gains have occurred or progress has faltered across and within countries is crucial to guiding decisions and strategies for future improvement. We used the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2016 (GBD 2016) to assess personal health-care access and quality with the Healthc…
Estimates of the global, regional, and national morbidity, mortality, and aetiologies of diarrhoea in 195 countries
BACKGROUND: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2016 provides an up-to-date analysis of the burden of diarrhoea in 195 countries. This study assesses cases, deaths, and aetiologies in 1990-2016 and assesses how the burden of diarrhoea has changed in people of all ages. METHODS: We modelled diarrhoea mortality with a Bayesian hierarchical modelling platform that evaluates a wide range of covariates and model types…
Measuring progress from 1990 to 2017 and projecting attainment to 2030 of the health-related Sustainable Development Goals for 195 countries and territories
BACKGROUND: Efforts to establish the 2015 baseline and monitor early implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) highlight both great potential for and threats to improving health by 2030. To fully deliver on the SDG aim of "leaving no one behind", it is increasingly important to examine the health-related SDGs beyond national-level estimates. As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 (GBD 2…

The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors (GBD) Study 2016, provides an up-to-date analysis of the burden of lower respiratory infections in 195 countries. This study assesses cases, deaths, and aetiologies spanning the past 26 years and shows how the burden of lower respiratory infection has changed in people of all ages. MET…
Global, regional, and national incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability for 354 diseases and injuries for 195 countries and territories, 1990–2017
BACKGROUND: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 (GBD 2017) includes a comprehensive assessment of incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability (YLDs) for 354 causes in 195 countries and territories from 1990 to 2017. Previous GBD studies have shown how the decline of mortality rates from 1990 to 2016 has led to an increase in life expectancy, an ageing global population, and an expansion of the non-fatal…
Crisis and Terror in the Horn of Africa

The result is a far-reaching and important book which critically examines a state…
The Seamingly Seamless Subversion of Sime
This paper aims to provide a review of Ethiopian artist Elias Sime’s work and places a detailed discussion of some of his main influences and themes in the context of Africa’s perceived position in the global art village. The construct of subversion is explored in relation to Sime’s work to provide a rich understanding of what Sime may be communicating through his art, which often seems to be ostensibly apolitical. This article aims to encourage …
Rethinking Culture in North East Africa
Poor dietary diversity, wealth status and use of un-iodized salt are associated with goiter among school children
The prevalence of goiter is higher in Dabat District, which confirmed a moderate public health problem. Therefore, regular monitoring of household salt iodine content, improving access to safe water, promoting the importance of diversified food for children is recommended to address the higher burden of iodine deficiency
Editors’ Preface
Neither Reform nor Revolution
The post-1991 political dynamics in Ethiopia has been defined by political polarization amidst multidimensional changes. The political discourse on the federal system and the ethno-national political configuration is stretched between two opposing stances namely the apocalyptic narrative of the opposition and the renaissance narrative of the ruling party. This paper contends that even though the two sides at face value appear different, however, …
Neither Tolerance nor Forbearance
Wollo society has long been traditionally known for its unique case of dignified-symbiotic-religiosity (DSR) that characterized Ethiopia as the model of peaceful religious coexistence. After nearly 40 years of secular experience, the tremor of reformist and revivalist religious groups has begun to introduce new religiosity that pose grave challenge and at times intolerance against the traditional religiosity. Tragically, Wollo has come to bear th…

Methodological problems to the understanding of the Rwandan genocide
This article is a prelude to other articles in this issue that provide multiple interpretations of the Rwandan genocide of 1994. The article explores how history, travel writing, autobiographical accounts, media and philosophical perspectives can draw attention to the many ways in which the Rwandan genocide can be understood. While this interdisciplinary methodological approach may not claim to be exhaustive, it teases out some important works wr…
Beyond the construction of crises
This issue of the African Identities journal is devoted to understanding the Zimbabwean crises, and many more books on the crisis tend to rightfully focus on secure institutional sites such as the economy, governance, politics, culture and human rights. While these have received a fair amount of attention, what has not been explored is how resilient ordinary Zimbabweans are surviving and leading successful and fulfilling lives. This reorientation…

State Disintegration and Human Rights in Africa
This article discusses external and internal disintegrative pressures at work on contemporary African states and examines the consequences of the failure of ideologies of nationalism and nation-statism for human rights. In particular, this paper examines the causes of state disintegration in Liberia and Somalia, suggesting that the effect is to exacerbate the already vulnerable position of marginalized groups

Racializing ethnicity and ethnicizing racism
This article examines and critiques current scholarship on African genocide. It begins by considering the theoretical approaches to the study of genocide and outlines some of the pitfalls that should be avoided. The discussion then moves to an analysis of the work of Mahmood Mamdani Mamdani , M. ( 2004 ). Beyond settler and native as political identities: Overcoming the political legacy of colonialism . Amilcar Cabral
One of the major critical issues of debate in Africa is the question of revitalizing African cultures. In South Africa, this has been given the name of African renaissance, and it is perceived as a continental ideology. However, debates are mired in essentialisms that have obscured rather than clarified the potentially unifying effect of the notion in Africa. In this article we contribute to the critical debate on the meanings of African renaissa…
The construction of the Beta Israel identity
Competing narrative discourses still define the early origins of the Beta Israel (Ethiopian Jews or black Jews of Ethiopia). A difficulty with reconstructing the past of Judaism in Ethiopia is that written records, though scarce, claim for themselves the 'unquestioned' role of narrating, controlling, containing and policing what can be said about the identities of the Beta Israel. This arrogance of written records is however constantly subverted …

Human Stability and Conflict in the Horn of Africa
States in the Horn of Africa have limited control of their economic situation and very little autonomy in security matters. Globalisation, the growing militarisation of conflicts and an ideological vacuum are some of the reasons for this. The idea that a central power (the state) can, or should, bring order to the periphery, should be questioned. When the rule of law is maintained at the expense of diversity, catastrophic conflict may arise. Regi…
Human Stability and Conflict in the Horn of Africa
Human stability is rare in the Horn of Africa. The history of the countries of the Horn since the end of colonialism in the region has largely been one of violent repression and insurgency. Succession by peaceful election has been the exception. This paper looks at the internal conflicts in the Horn of Africa in terms of the balance of power between civil society and the state in the countries comprising the Horn. A relevant feature is the format…
Codifier les nouveaux parlers en Afrique du Sud
The South African Constitution of 1996 makes provision for eleven official languages. Culture and language are seen as the two most important identity parameters in South Africa. However, the abolition of apartheid has introduced a social mobility, erstwhile denied to all, which is shaping new identities. This article examines the history of language policies in South Africa and advocates that in order to implement viable language and/or cultural…

Multiparty Democracy in Tanzania
This article attempts to understand the manner in which the notion of good governance has been applied in the United Republic of Tanzania. In 1989, the World Bank issued a document which argued that Africa's development problems were in essence a crisis of governance. This became the basis for the imposition of conditionalities in order to establish liberal democratic governments. More than a decade later, good governance still dominates the dono…

Introduction
The articles in this special edition all relate in diverse ways to the present incapacity of governments, especially the South African government, to execute internal reform programs that have traditionally been their preserve, but have changed in the face of global demands requiring the often scarce resources needed for such programs. One of the most important of these since the first democratically elected government came into power in South Af…
Media, Identity and the Public Sphere in Post-Apartheid South Africa

The popular struggle against the country's former apartheid regime and the on-going democratisation of South African politics h…

The Light of Origins. Beta Israel and the Return To Yerusalem
This article looks at the issue of the origin of the Ethiopian Jews and how they have survived the odyssey of their return to Yerusalem. The questions of how and when ancient Judaic influences entered Ethiopia remain the subject of controversy. Their impact on the last surviving Ethiopian Jews, the Beta Israel, and the Ethiopian Jews' right of return to modern Israel are of undoubted importance today. This raises the issue of whether the religiou…
