  • Verapaz Statistics

    Open Access•Lawrence H Feldman•ARTICLE•Estudios de Cultura Maya•2013

The Alta Verapaz of Guatemala is unique in Mesoamerica because of the lack of a violent hispanic conquest and subsequent encomendero exploitation (cf. Saint-Lu, 1968). The absence of such a conquest allows it to be used as a model against which one can test other theories of population decline and change in the Colonial period. The purpose of this paper is to provide data allowing those who wish to prepare these type of models using the Kekchi (G…

  • The Earliest Lowland Maya? Definition of the Swasey Phase

    Open Access•Norman Hammond, Duncan Pring et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1979•Cited by: 20•References: 8

Recent excavations in Belize have resulted in the discovery of an earlier period of sedentary occupation than has hitherto been documented in the Maya Lowlands. The Swasey phase is stratigraphically antecedent to occupations of the early Middle Formative, the earliest horizon located until now, and associated radiocarbon dates suggest a persistence from 2000-1000 b.c./2500-1300 B.C. The ceramic and lithic material culture of the phase are describ…

  • Of the Stone Called Iztli

    Open Access•Lawrence H Feldman•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1971•Cited by: 2

Recently, an article appeared in American Antiquity that attempted to correct and supplement Don E. Crabtree's ethnohistoric discussion of obsidian blade making. Unfortunately, this article did not probe as deeply as was possible into the available source material. As a supplement to a supplement, this note traces the antecedents of the sources given and provides relevant portions of those earlier texts
