Gender, Masculinity, and Professional-Avocational Heritage Collaborations
Professionals and avocationals often work side by side on archaeological sites, collaborate on research, and engage in mutual knowledge sharing. However, little attention has been paid to the way gender and social identities inflect these relationships. In this article I consider the gendered dimensions of avocational-professional relationships, drawing from experiences with a multi-stakeholder collaborative project in New England. I examine how …

The Poetry of the Americas: From Good Neighbors to Countercultures by Harris Feinsod

Oxford UP, 2017, 413 pp. In his introduction Harris Feinsod recalls a frequent question put to him when he was writing this book: How to envisage the enlarged collection of poets who pertain to the poetry of the Americas? Describing my topic in conver…

The ‘Event’ of Nationalism
This essay focuses on the role played by a series of events and how they were interpreted to have a foundational meaning for the creation of Mexican identity, nationhood and statehood. It compares the creation of Mexican statehood with the portrayal of Cuban nationhood, via the use of the supernatural signification and resonance associated with saints and/or apparitions of the divine. The three test cases used in this study are, for Mexico, the V…
Hispanism's Digital Turn
This essay focuses on the interface between praxis and theory in Hispanism in the twenty-first century. The author describes the ways in which his experience making documentary films at the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión in San Antonio de los Baños in Cuba led him to re-evaluate the way in which he taught theoretical and historical film courses at University College London. This led him, for example, to introduce a filmmaking exercise…
Digging and destruction: Artifact Collecting as Meaningful Social Practice
Collected sites are commonly seen as places requiring expert intervention to 'save the past' from destruction by artifact collectors and looters. Despite engaging directly with the physical effects of collecting and vandalism, little attention is given to the meanings of these actions and the contributions they make to the stories told about sites or the past more broadly. Professional archaeologists often position their engagement with site dest…
César Vallejo's Fifty-Two Autographs: A Garden of Forking Paths
In the mid-1990s a Uruguayan scholar, Juan Fló, discovered a photocopy of fifty-two manuscripts among Ángel Rama's private papers which were later verified to be the early handwritten drafts of poems by the famous Peruvian poet, César Vallejo (1892–1938), from his collection Poemas humanos as well as España, aparta de mí este cáliz. Vallejo's widow, Georgette, had been negotiating the terms of an edition of these valuable manuscripts with Ángel R…
Art in the gerund’ in the work of Luisa Valenzuela

Poetry on Trial: The Strange Case of Lorca's Poeta en Nueva York
This article offers new information on the adventures of the manuscript of Poeta en Nueva York by Federico García Lorca, which 'disappeared' in 1940. It must be emphasized that this manuscript does exist (the author of this article has seen it), and it currently lies in a strong box in Christie's in London. Its story reads rather like a Mexican television soap opera: despite the strenuous efforts of investigators who were as persistent as only La…

Privatization in American Religion and Society
Current discussions of religion and politics are often confused by lack of clarity about the ideas Americans hold about religion and its place in public life, and about their own relationships to churches and church teachings. An analysis of the idea of “privatization,” as it applies to American religion and its place within our society, may assist in providing more clarity. To this end, I will: (1) define some phenomena which might be termed “pr…

Some Preliminary Thoughts on Settlement in Southern Edom
In August–September of 1984, funded by a grant from the British Institute at Amman for Archaeology and History, the author undertook some survey work in southern Jordan on the Edomite plateau (Fig. 1). The southern area in particular revealed a very interesting pattern of settlement, a preliminary discussion of which is the purpose of this paper. The survey is as yet incomplete (the heavy lines on Maps 2–4 indicate the area surveyed in detail) an…

Five Soundings in Southern Jordan
In 1984 a season of survey was undertaken on the Edomite plateau (Hart and Falkner 1985; Hart 1986) during the course of which it was realized that an analysis of the material would be much facilitated by stratified material from soundings. No pre-Iron Age or post-Classical ceramic material was available from excavated contexts in this area and the period between the Edomite and Nabataean cultures remained obscure. Undoubtedly the Classical and I…

The Cultural Dimension of Social Movements: A Theoretical Reassessment and Literature Review
This article examines theoretical issues about movement culture through an assessment of the recent cultural turn in social movement research. Various strands of work are discussed: Fantasia's Cultures of Solidarity; efforts to revise resource mobilization theory, including the collection Frontiers in Social Movement Theory, and work on framing; and Ginsburg's Contested Lives. This work is helpful in focusing cultural analysis on practical, inter…
