French Fashion and Swedish “Sällhet”
Advocating for Half of Humanity against the Greatest Injustice
Research of the last couple of years has revealed the vital role women played in the intellectual life of the early modern era. During this period, women all over Europe started to participate in the learned world and argued for their right to education. This also holds true for the Scandinavian countries. One of the most distinguished philosophical voices in this debate is that of Danish philosopher and translator Birgitte Thott (1610–1662). Fam…
Att efterfölja amazonernas exempel
This article presents the previously unknown Swedish text "Fruntimbernas tapperhet" [The bravery of women], which has been preserved in manuscript in the archive of the Gothenburg family Alströmer. This text, which is based on a Latin dissertation from 1716, contains a discussion of around 15 female exemplars who all demonstrate women's ability to demonstrate the virtue fortitude. Rousseau, citizen of Geneva], written as a response to Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Lettre sur les spectacles (1758; in Rousseau 1968). Heretofore, Nordenflycht's poem has been considered primarily from the perspective of national literary and intellectual histo…
Louïze Labé Lionnoize
In this article, I discuss three central peritexts included in French poet Louise Labé’s Euvres de Louïze Labé Lionnoize, printed by Jean de Tournes in Lyon in 1555: the title page, the royal privilege, and a collection of celebratory poems. Arguing that the Early Modern book provided a space where women authors and their editors could engage with ongoing debates about women and their artistic capabilities, I analyse how the author figure Louise …
Internship as a Mean for Integration. A Critical Study
Creating internships for newly arrived refugees and immigrants is a well-established part of the Swedish national integration program and is seen as a strategy to speed up immigrants’ establishment process. One common belief is that the workplace is expected to give the newly arrived trainee necessary language training, as well as contextual and cultural knowledge. Here, the transferring direction of knowledge is from the Swedish workplace to the…
