  • The Enlightenment Scale

Belinda Boyd Wilson, Frank H Walkey et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of…•2015

The purpose of this study was to find further evidence for the validity of the Enlightenment Scale, a measure that has two factors: At Peace and Open-Hearted. The scale was designed to measure the simple experience of enlightenment. Enlightenment is essentially a way of being and is difficult to define in scientific terms; however, it can be said to involve the complete surrender of the separate self, and to be characterized by qualities such as …

Two studies report on the development and preliminary psychometric properties of a new scale measuring criminal attitudes to violence. In Study 1, the responses of a mixed sample of male prisoners were used to select 20 scale items from a larger pool. The final scale (the Criminal Attitudes to Violence Scale; CAVS) was designed so that it had a single‐factor structure and was uncorrelated with a measure of social desirability bias. It demonstrate…

  • A Comparison of Achievement and Aspirations of New Zealand Chinese and European Students

    Open Access•Rita Chi-Ying Chung, Rita Chi‐ying Chung et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•1997•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 3

The study found significant differences in educational and occupational aspirations of New Zealand-born Chinese students and their European counterparts. These aspirations were consistent with parental expectations. Although the parental pressure motivated Chinese students to succeed, it appeared to have a negative effect on their perception of their abilities

  • An Examination of Stereotypes of Chinese and Europeans Held by Some New Zealand Secondary School Pupils

    Open Access•Frank H Walkey, Ritacchi-Ying Chung•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•1996•Referencias: 7

Attitudes of the dominant European community toward Chinese in New Zealand have undergone major changes during this century, from denigration as undesirable immigrants to acceptance as a successful minority. The present study identifies and compares the salient dimensions of the current stereotype of Chinese and Europeans. Responses of 318 Chinese and European secondary school pupils showed that the stereotypes held by the two groups were very si…

Several aspects of cross-cultural differences in attributions remain relatively unexplored, including the issue of different criteria for success and failure, different forms of achievement motivation, the likelihood of making attributions, and different perceptions of causes on the dimensions of controllability, stability, and locus. The present study solicited New Zealand (Pakeha/European descent) and Singaporean (Chinese) students' attribution…

  • An Exhaustive Examination of the Replicable Factor Structure of the Maslach Burnout Inventory

    Open Access•Frank H Walkey, Dianne E Green•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1992

Three-factor first order analyses have been used in the most successful of previous attempts to define the factor and subscale structures of the Maslach Burnout Inventory. It is suggested in the present paper that although a three factor structure has been shown to be the most readily replicable, this result does not exhaust the number of possible replicable factors in the Inventory. Using six independent sets of data drawn from previous studies …

    Open Access•Dianne E Green, Frank H Walkey•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1988

The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) is a widely used measure of three specific aspects of the burnout syndrome-namely; emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and lack of personal accomplishment. It is rapidly becoming a valued tool in assessment of perceived burnout in human service professionals. Although its reliability and validity are well established, its factor structure is not. In previous studies different researchers have found very di…

  • From undesirable immigrant to model minority

    Rita Chi‐ying Chung, Frank H Walkey•ARTICLE•Immigrants & Minorities•1988•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 4

Attitudes of the wider society towards Chinese in New Zealand have undergone a substantial change within the past 30 years, from the negative ‘undesirable immigrant’ to a highly positive ‘model minority’. Unlike many other ethnic minorities in New Zealand, Chinese are seen now to be an extremely acceptable group. This article examines some of the historical and social events that have culminated in this dramatic change in attitude

  • Replication of Factors in Variations on a Synthetic Correlation Matrix

    Open Access•Frank H Walkey•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1986

A factor replication procedure (FACTOREP) which provides a solution to the number of factors problem for multiple scale questionnaires was evaluated using four psychometrically equivalent synthetic correlation matrices containing an imposed three-subscale structure. Comparisons of the structure revealed by two, three, four and nine-factor rotations using the FACTOREP procedure, clearly showed that only the three factor solutions were replicable a…

  • The Stress Arousal Checklist

    Open Access•Iain A Mccormick, Frank H Walkey et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1985

The factor structure of the Stress Arousal Checklist (SACL) was examined using the responses of a New Zealand sample of 203 first and second year University students. The results produced an almost exact replication of the two bipolar factors claimed by the authors who developed the SACL. In addition the results support the circumplex model of affect in which mood states are viewed not as unipolar independent variables but as two dimensional bipo…

  • Factorep

    Open Access•Frank H Walkey, Iain A Mccormick•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1985

FACTOREP is a computer program which provides information to solve the problem of determining the most appropriate number of factors to be rotated in order to produce a replicable and stable factor structure. This objective is accomplished by using the s index which enables a researcher to make comparisons of similarity across different factor structures. Matrices of s index values are produced to indicate the degree of similarity in analyses acr…

  • Multiple Replication of Factor Structure

    Frank H Walkey, Iain A Mccormick•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1985

A factor replication procedure which provides a solution for the numbers of factors problem for multiple scale questionnaire responses, is described and demonstrated. In the procedure a series of factor analyses are conducted in which a reduced number of factors is used for each successive rotation until a structure is found which is replicated across subject groups. The factor matching s index, which relates loadings as they fall about a series …

  • Simple Versus Complex Factor Analyses of Responses to Multiple Scale Questionnaires

    Frank H Walkey•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1983

Some effects of using inappropriate criteria for sufficiency of factors are discussed, and examples from the literature used to show how procedures leading to the rotation of large numbers of factors may result in fragmentation and difficulty in interpretation. Analyses of two psychometrically equivalent matrices containing an imposed scale structure led to dissimilar solutions, neither of them revealing the imposed structure, when a minimum eige…

  • The Structure Of The Eysenck Personality Inventory

    Frank H Walkey, Dianne E Green•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1981

Responses of 392 students to the Eysenck Personality Inventory were analyzed using conventional factor-analytic techniques and a nonmetric multidimensional scaling method. Rotating the first two factors gave a result clearly comparable with an earlier third-order analysis, while a three-factor rotation neatly clustered the original Extraversion, Neuroticism, and Lie scale items. A three-dimensional non-metric analysis appeared to provide no more …

  • Semantic Differential Response Bias in Psychopathic, Delinquent, and Normal Boys

    Open Access•Frank H Walkey, Roger Boshier•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1969

To test the notion that extreme responding on Semantic Differential scales is related to maladjustment 3 groups of 12-yr.-old boys rated socially meaningful Semantic Differential Concepts. A psychopathic delinquent and non-psychopathic delinquent group checked the neutral space more frequently than a control “normal” group

  • Changes in Semantic Differential Responses over Two Years

    Open Access•Frank H Walkey, Roger Boshier•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1969

Semantic differential scales with high loadings on the evaluation, activity and potency factors were administered twice to 54 12- to 15-yr.-old boys with an interval of 2 yr. between administrations. Semantic ratings varied in a negative direction at a significant level but variability of responses did not diminish to the degree found previously in younger children

  • Birth Order and Conservatism

To test Adler's suggestion that firstborn people are more conservative than later borns, a sample of Teachers' College students, and a second sample of adult education participants, completed a valid and reliable measure of conservatism. Adler's contention was not borne out

  • A Nonmetric Analysis Of Eysenck's Personality Inventory

    Dianne E Green, Frank H Walkey•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1980

A two-dimensional configuration obtained using a nonmetric technique described by Kruskal (1964), showed clear and almost perfect clustering of the items of the Eysenck Personality Inventory into the original Extraversion, Neuroticism and Lie scales. Comparison with a second configuration, plotted using data from Howarth (1976), which had been obtained by conventional factor-analytic techniques, showed a high level of agreement between the nonmet…
