Mapping current and potential criminal and security issues associated with climate change mitigation technologies
Our transition to a low-carbon future critically depends on technologies to mitigate climate change (CCMTs). These include renewable energies, carbon capture, utilisation and sequestration (CCUS), and electric vehicles. As many of them are still evolving technologies, they will likely present novel crime and security risks. Unfortunately, knowledge about such risks is still limited and fragmentary. This scoping review aims to bridge this gap and …
Crop to coke
The cocaine trade within Colombia involves a complex sequence of criminal activities, from coca cultivation to domestic distribution, shaped by violence, corruption, environmental degradation, and health risks. Despite extensive interest in Colombia’s cocaine trade, to date most scholarly attention about this trade within Colombia’s borders has been fragmented. The current study addresses this by providing a systematic examination of the cocaine …
Ransomware crime through the lens of neutralisation theory
This study examines ransomware crime through the lens of neutralisation theory, and explores techniques used by alleged offenders to justify their involvement in ransomware attacks. This work focuses on highly organised ransomware groups that not only conduct attacks but also operate as Ransomware-as-a-Service businesses. The interview data ( n = 9) used in this research were collected by several media and cyber security companies. Drawing on Kap…
Using Agent-Based Modelling and Reinforcement Learning to Study Hybrid Threats
Hybrid attacks coordinate the exploitation of vulnerabilities across domains to undermine trust in authorities and cause social unrest.Whilst such attacks have primarily been seen in active conflict zones, there is growing concern about the potential harm that can be caused by hybrid attacks more generally and a desire to discover how better to identify and react to them.In addressing such threats, it is important to be able to identify and under…
Anatomy of a route
Since the so-called ‘migrant crisis’ in 2015, there has been intense policy interest around irregular migration along the Central Mediterranean Route to Europe. Despite increased research focus on this route, the details and geographical intricacies of these migration journeys have scarcely been examined. In this study, we investigate the what, where and how of the journeys of 71 people who travelled from Libya across the Mediterranean Sea to Mal…
Exploring criminal specialisation in co-offending groups
Researchers have studied criminal specialisation at the offenders’ level to understand criminal careers. Despite criminal careers comprising events in which offenders co-offend with others, we know less about the extent of co-offending groups showing signs of becoming specialists. To start addressing this gap, in this study we report a method through which we identified 1,796 co-offending groups in a network containing information about adult off…
A scoping study of crime facilitated by the metaverse
The metaverse is an emerging convergence of technologies (e.g., virtual reality and blockchains) that enables users to experience mixed/extended realities for various legitimate purposes (e.g., gaming, tourism, manufacturing and education). Unfortunately, the crime and security implications of emerging technologies are often overlooked. To anticipate crimes that the metaverse might facilitate, we report the findings of a nominal group technique (…
Exploring the ‘Blurred Boundary
Objectives: This study examines the convergence of smuggling and trafficking in persons along the Central Mediterranean Route (CMR) to Europe. We explore where and how these phenomena blur, impacting states’ obligations and policy decisions. Methods: We analyse 71 interviews with migrants who travelled on the CMR in 2018 and 2019, with a focus on 17 participants who experienced forced labour. Results: We find clear overlaps and crossovers between…
Offending with the accomplices of my accomplices
We measured triadic closure in co-offending networks - i.e., the tendency of two individuals to co-offend if they share an accomplice - using a method that addresses the risk of overestimating clustering coefficients when using one-mode projections. We also assess the statistical significance of clustering coefficients using null models. The data relates to adult offenders (N = 274,689) connected to criminal investigations (N = 286,591) in Colomb…
Security and the smart city
The Problem with Crime Problem-Solving
In his 2018 Stockholm prize winner lecture, Goldstein highlighted the need for problem-oriented policing (POP) to be not only effective but also fair. Contributing to the development of POP, this study examines how a wider perspective on problem-solving generally, and scoping in particular, can be adopted to address some of the growing challenges in 21st century policing. We demonstrate that the concept of ‘problem’ was too narrowly defined and t…
