This paper describes three projects of varying breadth, depth, and scope in which social scientific scholarship has both theoretical and applied value. A bstract . Fluctuations in the harvest of menhaden off the U.S. Atlantic coast, a common property resource, have caused competition and conflict among the small number of companies, two large and several small, which operate in the fishery. With no strong central management , the resource is not being exploited to the optimum and increased fishing pressure and effort bring, cyclically, a peak catch followed by contraction in catch and industry. …

BLAU and Scott (1962:ix) have written that Modem man is man in organizations. For them and other students of society the most distinguishing feature of contemporary life is the dominant role played by large organizations.' This dominance is what Presthus (1962:59) refers to as the society, and is dated from the 1930's. The implications of such dominance are elaborated further by Etzioni (1964:1) who notes that most people in modem societies are b…

As CFM has continued to grow, it has developed the capacity to withstand fragmentation and conflict and still pursue its formally stated goals. The findings have important implications for a theory of social movements. For it becomes increa…
